Josh Taylor floors Jose Ramirez twice, becomes undisputed 140-pound champion

After 12 rounds of intense action, Taylor won the fight and all the spoils by unanimous decision over Ramirez.

To the victor goes the spoils.

 

Saturday night at Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas, NV, champions Josh Taylor and Jose Ramirez fought to determine who would be the unified junior welterweight titleholder.

 

After 12 rounds of intense action, Taylor won the fight and all the spoils by unanimous decision over Ramirez.

 

All three judges scored the championship bout exactly the same, 114-112 for Taylor.

 

Knockdowns scored by Taylor in rounds six and seven proved to be the difference.

 

Mutual respect was obvious in the opening stanza. Taylor, a southpaw, fired a number of jabs. Ramirez bobbed and weaved. Taylor landed a left to the body. Ramirez returned the favor seconds later with two left hooks to the ribs. Ramirez jabbed; Taylor countered at the bell of a very close three minutes.

 

Taylor,30, connected with a quick combination in round two. Ramirez,28, landed shots to the head and body.

Both fighters were feinting. Taylor was using angles effectively. A double jab connected. Ramirez flurried near the end of the heat.

 

Ramirez came out jabbing in round three. He fired shots to the head and body. A number landed. Taylor fought back with two uppercuts. Ramirez forced Taylor into the ropes and worked the body. He also landed a couple shots to the head. Taylor was back in the center of ring in round four. He fired a left to the belt line. Ramirez connected with a right downstairs. He bulled Taylor into the ropes and fired. Taylor connected with a left to the head. Ramirez connected with two left hooks to the head. Taylor punched back.

 

Taylor got off first in in the opening seconds of round five. Ramirez connected with a sweeping left. He did some more work to the belly. Taylor connected with two shots to the head.

 

In round six, Taylor floored the oncoming Ramirez with a counter left to the chin. Ramirez got up quickly and acknowledged the shot. Ramirez looked OK. He landed right hands to the jaw. Taylor took them well and went to the body. He also clubbed Ramirez with a cracking shot to the belly. After the knockdown, Ramirez was less anxious to jump inside in round seven. He jabbed to the body. Taylor bounced and punched. A huge inside uppercut floored Ramirez for a second time. This time he was hurt. Ramirez staggered back to his corner at the bell.

 

Taylor (18-0, 13 KOs) landed inside shots in round eight. Ramirez (26-1, 17 KOs) hadn’t fully recovered from being knocked down for a second time. He did manage to land a left, but ate a sharp right to the chin. Taylor clipped Ramirez with another uppercut. The Scotsman was in complete control. Taylor went searching for a knockout in round nine. He connected with a few punches. The gritty Ramirez fought back – landing a three-punch combination. The blows didn’t have the same zip as earlier in the fight. Both champion landed punches at the bell.

 

Ramirez, given a pep talk by trainer Robert Garcia, tried to up the ante in round 10. He worked downstairs. Taylor danced away. He fired two left hands. Ramirez landed a jab. Taylor left fly with a left to the chin. Ramirez connected with a hard right hand, but Taylor again clipped him with a left. Ramirez was jabbing in round 11. He was trying to set-up a big shot to turn around the fight. Taylor used the ring, but Ramirez rallied during the last 30 seconds of the stanza.

 

In the 12th and final round, Ramirez again tried to land a game changer, but could not. Taylor boxed smartly, jabbing from the outside and countering. Ramirez chased but the fight was Taylor’s.

 

“I’m ecstatic,” said Taylor. “I’m over the moon. I thought I won most of the rounds. I scored two knockdowns. I was using his aggression against him. I’ve got nothing but love for Ramirez.”
