"I’ll say it and I’ll say it again. I want to fight the best, and David Benavidez is one of the best in the division," said Morrell.
While his profile is starting to grow, it is quite shocking to me that he isn’t one of the biggest stories in boxing.
He’s only had 9 fights but is already a world champion with 4 title defenses in the bank. And, he has his sights set on a matchup with one of boxing’s best in undefeated fellow 168-pound champion David Benavidez.
WBA "regular" super middleweight regular champion, David Morrell Jr. (9-0, 8 KOs) turned pro in 2019 and was a world champion by his 5th fight.
This past Saturday, Morrell scored an impressive victory over Yamaguchi Falcao (24-2-1, 10 KOs), via KO 1 on the undercard of the Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia super fight in Las Vegas.
Morrell Jr. is a native of Cuba, but now calls Minneapolis, Minnesota, home. The fast-rising, undefeated star is in the early days of his career but he is already looking for bigger challenges, and a fight against Benavidez is something he is dialed in on.
Getting Benavidez’s name on a contract might be difficult as the unbeaten Phoenix, Arizona native is hot on the trail of undisputed 168-pound superstar, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
But, Morrell, who seems to be completely oblivious to the fact he is diving into deep championship waters after less than 10 fights, impresses every time out and he feels he is ready for the best of boxing. He can box, he can punch, and he wants to test himself against the elite of the division. As boxing fans – ya gotta love his attitude.
In a recent interview, a respectful, but confident Morrell made it clear who he wants next.
"I’ll say it and I’ll say it again. I want to fight the best, and David Benavidez is one of the best in the division," said Morrell.
Referencing the big card he was on this past weekend, Morrell said, "Millions of fans got to see what I’m all about and I believe I have the skills to beat him. I know he is a warrior that never backs down from a fight, so I’m expecting him to take the challenge. This is a fight I know that fans want to see. The winner can be next in line to fight Canelo”, he said.
In alluding to Benavidez’s “Monster” nickname, Morrell added, “I’m the real monster and I’m ready to prove it in the ring."
