Tszyu vs. Fundora

On March 30, the T-Mobile Arena in ‘Sin City’ is the site, and world titles are the order of the day.

In the main event we had former world welterweight king Keith ‘One Time” Thurman going up against fast-rising Australian star, and WBO super welterweight champion, Tim Tszyu (24-0, 17 KO’s). But an injury to Thurman has seen undercard fighter Sebastian “The Towering Inferno” Fundora slotted into the main event spot.

Fundora, (20-1-1, 13 KOs) comes in at a (nickname-inducing) towering 6-feet-5 ½. He has height that certainly adds intrigue to the bout.

While Fundora has the frame of a long, lanky boxer, he likes to engage in wars and that could make for a tough night against Tszyu. Fundora was scheduled to fight Serhii Bohachuk for the WBC strap. But, now Bohachuk will face Fundora conqueror, and former Tszyu challenger, Brian Mendoza.

Fundora, is nothing if not brave and isn’t looking for an easy path in his chosen profession. He will enter this fight against an aggressive, hard-punching Tszyu. Not an easy assignment after getting dropped and stopped in his last bout against Mendoza (L- TKO 7) in April.

A rough gig like Tszyu wouldn’t be the chosen opponent for a comeback bout after a TKO loss. But, the raise in pay, from undercard to main event, and a high-profile bout against a guy like Tszyu make it understandable why they took the fight.

While I think Fundora’s oddly tall frame (for the weight) makes for problems for any fighter, if the bout goes to the alley, one will have to favor Tszyu.

Can Tszyu get past the reach and height of Fundora? Can Fundora keep the aggressive Australian at bay with reach and hard shots from the perimeter?

Come fight night we will see who can impose their game plan.

Note - Another big name attached to this fight is that of P4P king Terence “Bud” Crawford.

Since drilling Errol Spence in the summer of 2023, Crawford has been linked to several big fights. But it looks like being the boss at super-welterweight appeals to him. Crawford, the WBO welterweight super champion, can challenge for the same belt in another weight division. So, it looks like the winner of Tszyu vs. Fundora could be going up against one of boxing’s best in Crawford in 2024.
