Random thoughts on the upcoming "big" fight between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia

Plenty of news here, most of it bad, but aren’t we supposed to be talking about a fight?

Ryan Garcia has a picture of an alien.

Garcia said he’d be suing this Saturday night’s opponent, Devin Haney, for touching him without his consent.

Oh, and later he said he was engaged to a porn star from Australia.

Last March, a video surfaced that he was dead after getting his throat slit.

What’s going on here?

There’s an old saying in advertising, "no news is bad news."

Plenty of news here, most of it bad, but aren’t we supposed to be talking about a fight?

Garcia and Haney are fighting in Brooklyn for Haney’s 140-pound belts this Saturday night.

Haney’s talent is obvious. His resume is impressive.

Garcia made his bones on social media, building up an immense following. Garcia CAN fight. His left hook is dynamic, but he looks limited, especially pitted against the versatility of Haney.

They split six fights in the amateurs - so they know each other. How much that carries into their bout is debatable. I don’t think that much. That was then. Both fighters have improved. Haney by leaps and bounds.

Haney went to Australia and whipped George Kambosos twice. He dominated his most recent opponent, Regis Prograis, in a way he predicted. He edged Vasyl Lomachenko.

Still, several boxing fans despise his style. He’s too defensive, they say. You can’t please everybody.

Garcia rebounded from his first loss by stopping Oscar Duarte five months ago. His performance received mixed reviews. His loss was devastating. Gervonta Davis knocked him down twice and stopped him.

It’s hard to tell how focused Garcia is.

Haney? He’s ready.

On paper, it looks like a battle of opposites. It’s easy to see why the oddsmakers have listed Haney as a 5-1 favorite.

Garcia can win if he hurts Haney - whose chin has a few question marks. Maybe he’s laying a trap for Haney by appearing unhinged. If he is, his acting is impressive.

Maybe he’ll put it all together in the ring.

Maybe he’ll be on fire.

Lots of maybe’s.

I think we know what we’ll get with the super-quick Haney.

A decision in his favor seems likely.
