Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Abner Mares are set to square off on February 9th in Carson, California for the WBA super featherweight world title. Davis and Mares have called each other out on social media over the past several months, and they have decided to settle the score in the ring.

If it wasn’t for their disputes on the internet, it would seem like an implausible fight, considering Davis is one of the best super featherweights in the world and Mares is coming off a unanimous-decision loss in a rematch last year against Leo Santa Cruz for the WBA world featherweight championship. Nevertheless, the fight is on and Mares is the clear underdog.

While Davis has strictly campaigned at 130 for his entire career, Mares will be fighting in his fourth weight class. Both have faced and defeated former featherweight champion Jesus Cuellar. Mares’ split-decision victory versus Cuellar was a slight upset, while Davis’ quick 3rd-round knockout against the former champion didn’t come as a surprise to many boxing experts.

The common narrative heading into the match-up between Davis and Mares is that Mares is biting off more than he can chew. Mares has been stopped inside the distance before, losing via 1st-round knockout against Jhonny Gonzalez in 2013 for the WBC featherweight world title, while on the other hand, the naturally-bigger Gervonta Davis has never tasted the canvas in his professional career.

There is no sugar-coating that going up to 130 to face one of the division’s best is a bold move by Mares. Davis is the clear favorite, and many are expecting him to win by knockout. Mares will receive a lot of credit if he can go the distance, let alone win the fight.

Mares is very well-mannered outside the ring. He is always courteous to fans and a good sport when interviewed. He regularly commentates fights and events for Premier Boxing Champions, and never fails to show proper respect for any fighter he talks about. Many followers of the sweet science would love to see him have success in his upcoming fight.

It will be the second time in a row that Davis will face a former featherweight champion moving up to 130. Next go-around, people will want to see him in the ring with a fighter who regularly campaigns at super featherweight. If Davis gets past Mares, many are hoping he later faces current IBF Super Featherweight World Champion Tevin Farmer before the end of 2019. They’ve bickered plenty back-and-forth on social media, and it’s time that they settle their differences in the ring. Davis’ come-forward aggressive style and Farmer’s fine defense and counterpunching would make for a very interesting stylistic match-up.
