Former world champion Ricky Hatton has died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 46.

No cause of death has been given at this time.

Nicknamed “The Hitman”, he won world titles in both the light-welterweight and welterweight divisions during a career that saw him face some great fighters of his era like Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao and Kostya Tszyu.

He retired in 2012 with a record of 45-3, 32 KOs. Hatton would turn pro in 1997 and fight for 15 years. The Stockport, Cheshire, United Kingdom-born Hatton would be massively popular in Manchester, England where he lived and fought many times.

Hatton was embraced in his native England as an all-action fighter who was seen as an everyday “man of the people”. He was hugely popular and drew massive crowds fighting in Manchester’s M E N (Manchester Evening News) Arena.

In recent years, he had been open about his struggles with alcohol, drugs and depression. However, Hatton was due to return to the ring in December for a comeback fight against Eisa Al Dah in Dubai on December 2.

In retirement, Hatton opened a gym and became a successful trainer.

Since the announcement of his passing, tributes have been pouring in.

“A friend, a mentor, a warrior. Ricky, thank you for everything, for your fights, your moments of glory, your grit. Thank you for pushing us, showing us what’s possible.

Rest well, Ricky. You’ll always have your place in the ring of our memories.” - Amir Khan

“There will only ever be one Ricky Hatton” - Tyson Fury

“Rest in Peace Mr. Ricky Hatton. We salute you” - Chris Eubank Jr.

Hatton is survived by three children, Millie, Fearne and Campbell as well as a granddaughter, Lyla.

Rest in Peace, Champion.
