Chatman Claims New England Title In Rhode Island

By Stephen Tobey at ringside in Lincoln, Rhode Island: Chris Chatman lives in Jersey City, N.J., not one of the New England states.

Yet on Friday he became the New England middleweight champion.

Chatman won an eight-round split decision over defending champion Thomas Falowo at the Twin River Events Center.

Clark Sammartino and Steve Weisfeld scored it 78-74 for Chatman (14-5-1, 5 knockouts). Falowo of Pawtucket, R.I., dropped to 14-4 (8).

In the second, Falowo landed a solid left hook with Chatman on the ropes. Chatman quickly spun him around and attacked the body. He kept the pressure on Falowo for the rest of the round before the taller fighter landed a solid right just before the bell.

Late in the third, while Chatman went in to land a left, his head hit Falowo and Falowo stumbled back and a cut opened over his left eye.

Falowo landed some shots in the fifth and sixth that briefly knocked Chatman off balance, on one foot, but Chatman stayed up.

In the eighth, Chatman moved a little more, going in and out of range and attacking the cut eye.

Kali Reis of Providence, R.I. won an eight-round unanimous decision over Althea Saunders of Atlantic City, N.J. in a middleweight bout. Steve Weisfeld and Eddie Scuncio scored it 80-72. Peter Harry scored it 79-73. Reis is now 10-5-1 (4); Saunders is 3-3-2.

Nick DeLomba of Cranston, R.I. retained his New England super lightweight title with a six-round unanimous decision against Oscar Bonilla of Bridgeport, Conn. All three judges scored it 58-56 for DeLomba, who fought with a cut over his right eye since the first round. DeLomba is now 10-1 (2). Bonilla is 3-2-2.

Jamaine Ortiz of Worcester, Mass. stopped Kimmy St. Pierre of Saint Georges, Quebec in the third round of a scheduled four at lightweight. Ortiz (2-0, 2 KO s) dropped St. Pierre at the end of the third with a body shot. Ricky Gonzalez stopped the fight just after the bell. St. Pierre dropped to 1-2 (1).

Debuting welterweight Cristobal Marrero of New London, Conn stopped Roosevelt Archie of Turtle Creek, Pa in the first round of a scheduled four. Marrero dropped Archie with a left hook to the body. Archie (0-2) got up but the fight was stopped at 1:05.

In a battle of undefeated junior middleweights, Ray Oliveira, Jr. of New Bedford, Mass. won a four-round majority decision over Andy Gonzalez of Worcester, Mass. Clark Sammartino and Eddie Scuncio scored it 39-37. Steve Weisfeld scored it 38-38. Oliveira, the son of former junior welterweight title contender Ray Oliveira, is now 5-0 (1). Gonzalez dropped to 3-1 (3).

Middleweight Kendrick Ball, Jr. of Worcester, Mass. stopped debuting Bruno Dias of Woburn, Mass. in the second round of a scheduled four. Ball is now 2-0 (2).
