Shaw was the Chief Operating Officer (COO) for New Jersey-based Main Events working for the Duva family’s long-successful promotional firm, once hosting a huge stable of stars.
Bed-ridden at his home in Florida since a January heart attack, the boxing world was saddened to hear of the passing of long-time promoter Gary Shaw, 79.
Shaw kicked off his career in boxing working for the New Jersey Athletic Commission as an inspector. He was there for nearly 3-decades before getting into promoting fighters himself.
Shaw was the Chief Operating Officer (COO) for New Jersey-based Main Events working for the Duva family’s long-successful promotional firm, once hosting a huge stable of stars.
After leaving Main Events, he started up his own Gary Shaw Productions. Flying solo, he continued to work with some of the sport’s biggest names promoting approximately 175 cards during the company’s (dozen-plus years) run.
Throughout his career, Shaw would work with a huge collection of the sport’s biggest names like Tim Bradley, Diego Corrales, Shane Mosley, Winky Wright, Diego Corrales, Miguel Cotto, Lennox Lewis, Vitali Klitschko, Felix Trinidad and Fernando Vargas, among many others.
A native of New Mexico, Shaw was trained in Physical Education at the University of Miami. Shaw was instrumental in developing the television series “ShoBox: The New Generation,” a show that had a big following and did huge numbers on the Showtime network. The show broke a lot of fighters and made them stars. Shaw was also involved in events with the biggest boxing networks in the game like HBO, Showtime, ESPN and SKY Sports.
In August 2021, Shaw joined the World Boxing Association as the Chief of Staff to the pioneering body’s presidency and advisor to President Gilberto Jesus Mendoza.
Shaw was a member of the Nevada, California, and New Jersey Boxing Hall of fame.
Friend and long-time associate, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman, tweeted - “Boxing has lost a very dear person today. Gary Shaw has passed away. Our condolences go to Judy and the kids. I will always remember Gary with his unique smile, fun character and passion for boxing. Rest in peace my dear Gary”.
On behalf of the entire MaxBoxing team, Rest in Peace Gary.
