David Morrell ready for anyone at 168

One fighter who would fight any of them is undefeated Morrell, (10-0, 9 KOs), who recently came out (verbally) swinging after recently watching Edgar Berlanga score a KO 6 over Padraig McCrory.

It seems everyone in and around 168 pounds is angling for a shot at boxing’s cash register - Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

As boxing’s top draw, most fighters understand that Canelo is in the enviable position of picking who he wants to fight.

Undefeated contenders and champions like David Benavidez Jr., Jaime Munguia, Edgar Berlanga, and WBA champ David Morrell Jr., would all love a shot at the Mexican superstar.

Benavidez is looking at a jump to 175 if Canelo keeps him on ice so that leaves Berlanga and Munguia as front runners to get their Canelo cash.

One fighter who would fight any of them is undefeated Morrell, (10-0, 9 KOs), who recently came out (verbally) swinging after watching Edgar Berlanga score a KO 6 over Padraig McCrory.

Morrell Jr. threw gas on the Berlanga fire, stating he could defeat the rising star in just one round. The comments, while good press, probably won’t lead to anything if Berlanga thinks he can land a Canelo fight.

Morrell is one of the most interesting stories in boxing. Why he isn’t the constant talk of every boxing fan baffles me as his story is unique and great.

Morrell turned pro in 2019, had a world title by his 3rd, (yes, you read that right, THIRD), fight a year later. He has now defended his title 6 times in 10 fights (9 KOs).

Impressive, to say the least.

Morrell, living in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and trained by one of the very best in the game, Ronnie Shields, is nothing if not confident.

After the recent win by Berlanga, a fighter who gained press for a long string of 1st round KOs after truing pro, Morrell quickly added him to his 168-pound hit list. And, he made it clear how he thought the matchup would play out.

"Berlanga is simply not on my level,” said Morrell Jr. “I’ve watched his fights, and I see nothing that worries me. Berlanga sucks, and I would destroy him. If we ever step into the ring together, I’ll knock him out in one round, guaranteed,", he continued. "I’m here to prove that I’m the best. Whether it’s Berlanga, or anyone else, I’ll be ready to step into the ring and show the world what I’m made of. I’m the best fighter in the super middleweight division, and soon everyone will know that."
