At the age of 35 Moruti Mthalane, 36-2-(24), became a world champ once more on Sunday night when he won a close 12 round points decision win over Muhammad Waseem, 8-1-(6), to win the vacant IBF flyweight at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Waseem, from Pakistan, was outworked early on but came on late and decked Mthalane in round seven but it was not enough to secure victory. The scores were 114-113 twice and 116-110.
On the same card WBA light flyweight champ Carlos “CCC” Canizales, 21-0-1-(17), of Venezuela retained his title with a 12th round stoppage win after in the last second of round 12 against Lu Bin.. Bin hit the canvas after in rounds 11 and 12.
Bin, 1-1-(1), was bidding to become the first boxer to ever win a world title in only their second fight.
