Only 20 years old, Ohio-born, southpaw sensation Abdullah Mason picked up his 15th straight win and 13th stoppage.
Saturday night, live from Videotron Centre in beautiful Quebec City, Canada, undefeated 168-pound banger Christian Mbilli (28-0, 23 KOs) defeated 3-time world title challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko (15-6, 10 KOs) via UD 10 in an impressive performance.
But, before the main event, fans were treated to a young, undefeated lightweight that ESPN play-by-play man Joe Tessitore called perhaps “the number one prospect in the sport." Only 20 years old, Ohio-born, southpaw sensation Abdullah Mason picked up his 15th straight win and 13th stoppage.
Mason scored a TKO 2 over Massachusetts veteran Mike Ohan Jr. (19-3, 9 KO’s) who had been in with many experienced fighters and was predicted to give Mason some rounds. Well, Mason didn’t get that memo and blitzed him in 2.
A perfectly placed left uppercut sent Ohan to the canvas in the very 1st round. In the following round, Ohan was dropped again with a straight left hand. The corner, clearly reading the writing on the wall, stepped in to stop the action, saving their fighter from serious damage.
Top Rank Boxing is keeping him busy and fans can look forward to at least one more fight before the end of the year. After the fight, Mason was happy with the win but looking forward to getting back to work.
“Right now, it’s back to the gym. We’re going to take a little time off and be right back. I’ve got another fight coming up at the end of this year, probably sometime in November. Mason said. “We executed the game plan how we wanted to”, he said. “The only way is up”, he said, reflecting on his current, and rapid, rise in the pro ranks.
Mason, who turned pro as a teenager and is already heading into the completion of his 3rd year as a pro, shows the ability to box and bang and has a very strong inside game. He stays right in the pocket, doesn’t get hit and returns fire with precise and damaging shots. Impressive stuff. This is a young man headed to a world title shot sooner than later.
Many have said he can be a future great and is worthy of all the praise he is getting. Fun stuff for fight fans, let’s enjoy the ride.
