The Rumble in Reno: Shakur Stevenson crowned champion

It was two undefeated fighters, both in their first world title shot with Newark, New Jersey’s Shakur Stevenson facing Glendora, California’s Joet Gonzalez. Things had gotten a little heated during fight week and there appeared to be no love lost between the two.

Stevenson, a pro since April of 2017, was favored over Gonzalez who turned pro 5 years earlier than Stevenson and had also racked up 11 more wins. Stevenson, a 2016 Olympian, was the favorite going in but Gonzalez was considered a very live underdog. The slick, southpaw boxing of Stevenson was thought to be the perfect foil, style-wise, for Gonzalez who would go in considered as the more aggressive of the two in terms of style. In the end, the slick style of Stevenson – movement, angles, strong counter punching and an exceptional defense were more than enough for Stevenson to cruise to a one-sided decision

Main Event

In a fight for the vacant WBO featherweight world title, Shakur Stevenson (13-0, 7 KO’s) had no problem dismantling the challenge of Joet Gonzalez (23-1, 14 KO’s). Stevenson was to slick and slippery for Gonzalez and walked away with a one-sided victory with scores of 119-109 on all three cards.
