During last Wednesday’s press conference, Callum Smith said he would knock George Groves out.

Two days later, he did just that.

Smith, captured the World Boxing Super Series final and WBA super middleweight championship when he stopped Groves in round seven at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia Friday night.

The time 2:04 seconds into round seven.

In the opening stanza, Groves boxed smartly, shooting his jab and hooking occasionally. Smith, the taller fighter by a good three inches, stalked and tried to time Groves. He landed a right hand that got Groves attention.

In rounds two and three, Groves continued to work his jab to the head and body. Smith,28, stalked and waited to counter. He landed a straight right hand. Groves connected with a right of his own.

Smith (25-0, 18 KOs) caught Groves with a clean left hook round four. The punch was similar to the one that would end the match 15 mins later. Groves feinted and waited. He went to the body nicely. His jab was his best friend. He also ate a right.

The first four rounds were close. Groves (28-4, 20 KOs) was busier—while Smith calmly prodded with his jab and let his right go. His blows seemed to be bothering Groves a bit.

Groves,30, backed up Smith in round five. He slid to his left—trying to outfox the Liverpool native. He landed a solid shot to the ribs.

Smith used his advantage in reach to catch Groves with a long right hook in round six. Groves landed solidly to the body. He also found Smith’s chin with a right. Smith clocked Groves with a solid combination.

Smith continued to press the action in round seven. Groves, from Hammersmith, Eng., circled to his left and countered. As he moved forward, a big left hook separated him from his senses. A rapid-fire combination to the head and body sent him to his knees. Groves shook his head as the referee waved off the contest.

Returning to action for the first time since losing on points to headliner

Groves seven months ago, Chris Eubank Jr. (27-2, 21 KOs) was declared the winner when J.J. McDonagh (16-5, 8 KOs) couldn’t come out for round four. An injury to McDonagh’s shoulder is suspected, though Eubank didn’t buy it. Eubank floored his former sparring partner with a sweeping left hand in the stanza.
