Former IBF world champion Robert Guerrero (37-6-1, 20 KOs) edged one-time welterweight titleholder Victor Ortiz (32-7-3, 25 KOs) over ten uneventful rounds at T-Mobile Arena Saturday night.

Neither fighter was “ghostly” or “vicious.”

All three judges scored the bout 96-94.

Guerrero,38, and Ortiz,34, seemed content to swap shots on the inside. In other words, a phone booth fight. Guerrero did well in the second heat while Ortiz battled back in the later rounds.

Most of the rounds were very similar. It wasn’t pretty. The crowd began to boo in the later stages of round eight for lack of action.

Entering the 10th and final round the bout appeared to be in the balance. Who wanted it more?

Guerrero.

The Gilroy, CA native fought like he was behind on the cards, throwing punch after punch. Ortiz offered little resistance, punching back occasionally but lacking any urgency.

Guerrero’s strong 10th frame proved to be the difference on the cards.

"Now I’m ready to step up and fight anyone they put in front of me,” said Guerrero. “I have a lot left in me and I’m in this sport to win another world title. I dedicate this fight to my family and I give all the glory to my lord and savior Jesus Christ.”

Guerrero was wobbled a couple of times during the fight. Winning another title seems like a pipe dream.

"I thought I won. It is what it is,” said Ortiz. “It was a close fight. He didn’t hurt me. A couple of times I got caught off balance but that was it. I should have boxed a little better, but hey, he did what he had to do.”

Ortiz didn’t do what he needed to do, but both old champions tried to the end of the fight. The effort was there but not the sharpness from a few years ago.
