Remembering Gary Russell Sr.

The boxing world was saddened to hear of the passing of Gary Russell Sr. Russell is the father of former world champion Gary Russell Jr., (31-2, 18 KO’s), unbeaten bantamweight contender Gary Antonio Russell (19-0, 12 KO’s) and power punching prospect Gary Antuanne Russell (15-0, 15 KO’s). The father, and family matriarch, had trained his 3 sons throughout their professional and amateur careers.
Russell Sr.’s training career started when he took his oldest son, Gary Antonio Jones, to a recreation center in their home of Capital Heights, Maryland. Russell Sr., himself a former boxer, started training his oldest son, and many sons to follow. He shepherded 4 of his sons to Nation Golden Gloves titles as amateurs and then proceeded to coach Gary Russell Jr. to the WBC featherweight world championship in 2015, after he had turned pro 6 years earlier. Two of his other sons, super bantamweight Gary Antonio Russell, and super lightweight Gary Antuanne Russell, are both undefeated contenders knocking on the door of world title shots.
The father of the 3 world rated fighters had struggled with health issues over the last few years,
battling the effects of Type 2 diabetes and strokes. He was 63.
