The thinking before the Regis Prograis and Terry Flanagan bout was that Flanagan would box, and Prograis would stalk--looking for a knockout. By the of end of the fight, Prograis had flipped the script, using a stinging jab and a sledgehammer left to score a wide unanimous 12-round decision at the U.N.O Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, LA Saturday night.

“This was our game plan,” Prograis said after the fight. “People say I’m nothing but a puncher, but this is the way I train in the gym.”

Scores were 119-108, 118-109, and 117-110.

It was apparent from the opening bell that Prograis (23-0, 19 KOs) had an edge in athleticism. He moved his head side-to-side, and fired a jab that kept Flanagan off balance. Flanagan hung tough, but as the fight progressed he looked more and more confused. He was being outhustled and try as he might, couldn’t stop Prograis attack.

With Flanagan (33-2, 13 KOs) concentrating on the jab, Prograis clocked him with his powerful left. That punch almost ended matters in round eight when Prograis caught Flanagan with a good shot to the chin. The blow sent the English fighter to his knees, but to his credit, he pulled himself up and battled on.

Flanagan had pockets of success in rounds five and 11, but Prograis was consistent-tattooing him with shots to the body and head. With his hometown crowd cheering him on, Prograis stunned Flanagan near he end of the fight, but the sturdy Flanagan refused to go down.

“Flanagan was a tough fighter and I knew he would be hard to beat,” Prograis said. “But I had the most fun out there tonight than I’ve ever had from Round 1 to Round 12. The Muhammad Ali tropy is mine, I don’t care who I fight”

Prograis will next face Kiryl Relikh in the semi-finals of the World Boxing Super Series.

Baranchyk batters Yiget to win IBF belt

Realizing his lifelong dream of winning a world title, Ivan “The Beast” Baranchyk captured the IBF super lightweight title by stopping super game Anthony Yiget after seven brutal rounds in the co-main at the U.N.O Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, LA.

Baranchyk (19-0, 12 KOs), who lives in Oklahoma but was born in Russia, used his strength and power to rattle Yiget (21-1, 7 KOs) from the opening bell.

Yiegt, a native of Swedan, didn’t box but stayed in the pocket and brawled. He did connect with a couple of rights early on, but Baranchyk batted them away like one would a pesky fly.

By round two, Yiget was bleeding near his left eye—three rounds later, that eye, after getting battered by numerous right hands, was completely closed. Yiget fought back on guts and instinct. He popped Baranchyk with jabs and sneaky rights that seemed to fire Baranchyk up.

In round six, Yiget was leaking oil and blood. He was still trading with Baranchyk—possibly hoping he might land something significant, but it wasn’t to be.

After round seven, which saw Yiget staggered, the ringside doctor gazed at Yiget’s swollen lobe and told the referee the fight was over. Yiget yelled that he could still see-but it was courage that was doing the talking.

Baranchyk will face the winner of next week’s World Boxing Super Series quarter-final bout between Josh Taylor and Ryan Martin.
