In most things in life, timing is everything. This old adage couldn’t be more accurate than in the ring. Landing punches, putting yourself in the right position to land effectively, knowing when to move in, when to move out, what can you control in terms of your timing and movement that can allow you to walk your opponent into something? What can you do in terms of timing your movements in the ring to stay out of harms way? In this video by Teddy Atlas, “Timing – Boxing’s Shot Clock for Success,” Atlas looks at all of this and more.

A trainer of a multitude of amateur and professional champions, The Boxing Hall of Fame’s Atlas has put together more must-see TV for the trainer and fighter, in this his 6th video in the highly popular series for Dynamic Striking Video.

Boxing is a game of inches and seconds and that all goes back to timing in the ring. Step in a second late and you allow yourself to be countered, step in too early and you can over-step your opponent, step too soon or step too late and you can take yourself out of position, or worse put yourself in a bad spot to be countered. Timing can’t be close, it has to be exact, because a second too soon or too late can be the difference between offensive success and defensive liability.

The video highlights that timing is indeed one of the trickiest things for boxers and students to understand and develop. Atlas uses lessons, and displays techniques, to learn the timing and fundamentals of how to move in and out, how to find counters and when you should be punching to make the best contact.

Atlas never fails to inject some humorous names to the various moves and techniques he shows you in the ring and he doesn’t disappoint here. Part 1 includes – The Introduction, Leap Frog and Barging in the Room. Part 2 displays the Snake in the Hole and Open Windows. Part 3 introduces the Check Hook, The Burp and Ride the Rails. And, then part 4 sees Atlas demonstrating Clipping the Hedges and The Step Out.

As Atlas states, “We have been going to different planets in this journey, and today’s planet is the planet of timing. It’s all about being in the right place at the right time. But, how does that happen? By luck? By intuitiveness? Or is it by design? Someone understanding their environment better than somebody else? Being more aware of the element of everything that is going on around them. And, then knowing what to do at the right time”.

Atlas, a world-renowned trainer of many world champions, knows better than anyone how to put his fighter in the right spot, at the right time, to maximize offensive effectiveness without sacrificing defense. And, then for them to know what to do…at the right time.

Learn from the best!
