Teddy Atlas Jabs

In this, the 4th in a series of videos by Teddy Atlas for DynamicStriking, we see the Boxing Hall of Fame’s Atlas’ latest in his instructional boxing series. This video focuses on what is perhaps the most important punch in a boxers’ arsenal - the jab.

So far Atlas has released videos that focused on The Fundamentals of Boxing, Signature Punches from Some of Boxing’s Greats, The Peek-a-Boo Style of Boxing and this latest entitled, “Keys to the Door – 14 Signature Jabs”.

In boxing it is all about range and distance for both defense and offence and everything works of the jab; it is indeed the measuring stick. The jab sets up your punches going in on offence and it also allows you to keep your opponent at the right distance to measure yourself for maintaining a defensive posture. It is the most fundamental of punches in a fighter’s toolbox and Atlas goes through the variety of jabs, and their application, for a fighter in relation to both offense and defense.

Atlas is all about fundamentals. A world-renowned trainer, Atlas has long said that everything in boxing works off of a foundation. In boxing, there might not be a punch that is more important to building the foundation of a boxer than the jab.

Despite Atlas’ Hall of Fame resume as a commentator, teaching is Atlas’ first love, and these videos provide the perfect vehicle for the man who trained numerous world champions and contenders throughout his legendary career. Atlas brings his usual wit and humor to the session as he introduces the various punches, and their use, in the ring.

Atlas brings a lighthearted approach to the naming of his various jabs that is both entertaining and accurate for the participant. However, when Atlas walks you through the punch you see why he named them as he did. Part 1 features the introduction to the video, then he goes into The Slip Jab, The Side Jab, The Triple Jab Distance and The Submarine Jab, among others. Part 2 sees Atlas teaching 3 entitled Under the Table, The Snake Charmer and The Push and Pull. Parts 3 and 4 feature the uniquely titled, The Woodchuck, The Hook and Jab, The Hunter’s Jab, The Uppercut Jab, The Other Side of the Street and The Shot Put.

Atlas also likes to make the connection between a punch and a famous fighter that executed it so well. He does this in Parts 3 and 4 when he features two champion fighters that had outstanding jabs: the late, great Hector Camacho and his ‘Trip Hammer’ and heavyweight legend Larry Holmes’ ‘Beach Towel Whip’.

This video series has become extremely popular for both coaches and fighters from novice level, through to amateur participants and established professionals. The videos are entertaining, well-paced and take you through the fundamental, and critical, steps and movements for a fighter in the ring incorporating the jab. Atlas, who has worked with the elite of professional boxers throughout his storied career, manages to find a common ground for the viewer that allows, through his detailed, yet understandable teaching methods, instruction that is applicable to all levels of boxer, from a novice to an established, experienced fighter.

Many people have heard trainers and coaches say, “everything works off the jab in boxing”. It is the foundational punch for both offence and defense and is the most critical weapon for a fighter. This video takes you through a detailed, step-by-step breakdown of the punch, and its very application in the ring, by a true boxing legend. Atlas has taught, and applied, the very fundamentals he is teaching to fighters from beginning amateurs to world champions. You want to open the door? You need the keys, and the jab is the key – this video is the place to start.

Outstanding, entertaining and applicable. *****/5
