It was a great day of boxing in Ireland with the fans at Falls Park, in Belfast, Northern Ireland getting to see their hometown hero in his first title shot. In the night’s highly anticipated main event, it was former world champion (and Portlaois, Ireland-born) TJ Doheny (22-3, 16 KO’s) taking on popular former Olympian, and undefeated Irish star, Michael Conlon (16-0, 8 KO’s) for the (interim) WBA world featherweight title. The fight, promoted by MTK Global, was shown live on the ESPN+ network.

Main Event

Unbeaten featherweight Michael “Mick” Conlan, clearly the star of this show, captured the WBA "interim" featherweight title with a UD 12 over former junior featherweight world champion TJ Doheny in the night’s feature fight. Conlan dropped Doheny with a nice body shot in round five and then went on to handle him the rest of the way while banking scores of 119-108, 116-111, 116-111. There is no boxing crowd like an Irish boxing crowd and a little rain certainly didn’t dampen the excitement in the raucous stadium. Channeling his inner Marvin Hagler, Conlon walked out to Edwin Starr’s 70’s soul classic “War” (Hagler’s walk-out theme) looking to please the local faithful. He rumbled and he boxed and he is now a world title belt holder. The massively popular Irish star has a lot of options in the 126-pound class and his local loyal following would welcome him back for a title defense.

Chief Support Bouts

Scotland’s undefeated Lee McGregor (11-0, 9 KO’s) stopped France’s Vincent LeGrande (32-1, 17 KO’s) in the 4th round to pick up the EBU bantamweight title.

Ireland’s Tyrone McKenna (22-2, 6 KO’s) won a UD 10 over tough Mexican veteran Jose Felix (39-5, 30 KO’s) winning the WBO Inter-Continental super lightweight title.

Belfast’s Padraig McCrory (12-0, 6 KO’s) stopped rugged Russian Sergei Gorokhov (11-3, 7 KO’s) via TKO 5. After getting dropped in the 4th, and sporting a badly spilt nose, the referee decided to halt the contest in the 5th round giving the unbeaten McCrory the win.
