Oleksandr Usyk wins grueling 12 rounder over Derek Chisora

Oleksandr Usyk held off a determined Dereck Chisora Saturday night at SSE Arena in Wembley, England, winning a hard-fought 12-round decision.

 

Scores were 117-112, and 115-113 twice for Usyk.

 

Chisora came out throwing bombs in the opening stanza. Usyk, a slow starter, avoided most but caught a few. Usyk (18-0, 13 KOs) fired a few combinations but the round was all Chisora. Usyk circled to his left in round two. Chisora (32-10, 23 KOs) moved after him. Usyk kept moving and Chisora landed a heavy right.

 

In round three, southpaw Usyk started firing combos. Chisora continued to bank on his right. Usyk connected with an uppercut. A left seemed to bother Chisora-who was breathing heavy at the end of the round. Usyk looked a little more comfortable in round four. Chisora connected with a right hook. Usyk popped Chisora with body and head shots. Chisora rallied at the end of and stanza.

 

Chisora went to the belly in round five. Usyk caught Chisora with a combination. His use of lateral movement was making Chisora miss-except for a hard jab. Usyk connected with a left hook and right that stopped Chisora in his tracks.

 

After five rounds the bout was close. The pressure applied by Chisora had won him the first two rounds. Usyk figured out a way to score more consistently in the next three rounds, but Chisora, was occasionally landing. Usyk landed a counter left in round six. He peppered Chisora, who chased like what he is – a fighter on a mission. Usyk came out punching in round seven. Usyk jabbed and jabbed. Usyk scored and moved away. Chisora stalked but didn’t rock. A Usyk right wobbled Chisora near the end of the heat.

 

In round eight, Usyk continued to get off first. Chisora was running into shots. He was tired but as always, loaded with courage. Usyk jabbed and used lateral movement. He tattooed Chisora with stinging shots. Chisora needed to land a bomb to change the way the complexion of the fight. Usyk connected with a clubbing left in round nine. Chisora pushed Usyk back - and fired a huge right that missed by a foot. Usyk stepped in with two right jabs. Chisora clipped him a right to the ribs.

 

Chisora walked in winging punches in round 10. Had he found his second wind? Usyk fought back, but Chisora appeared to have won that round. Usyk was tired as well. Usyk backed up Chisora in round 11. Chisora walked away. Usyk went to the body and head. Chisora did the same. His shots were heavy and hard to hurt. Chisora was dog tired and eating punches at the end of the round.

 

Both fighters let their hands go in round twelve. Usyk appeared to have the edge, but wasn’t taking anything for granted. Chisora continued to go the body. Usyk worked his left as Chisora chased him at the bell.
