It is amazing to think that a little over a decade ago Mikaela Mayer decided she wanted to be a fighter, and down that road she went.

After concluding a very good amateur career, Mayer sat down with boxing’s biggest and best, Top Rank Boxing out of Las Vegas, and convinced them to take a shot with her as a professional. Now, a little over 3 years after she made her pro debut, she is a world champion.

In the chief support bout, to the American debut of Naoya Inoue going up against Australia’s Jason Maloney, Mayer won a unanimous decision over long-reigning champion Ewa Brodnicka to capture the WBO world super featherweight title. (*Note – Inoue scored an impressive KO 6 in the main event)

The year 2020 has certainly been strange and had its numerous low points. However, for California-born, Colorado-residing super featherweight Mayer, she will remember it as the year she fulfilled her dream - calling herself a world champion; one of her many professional goals.

Going into the fight with (now former) WBO super featherweight champion Ewa Brodnicka, Mayer knew she would have to use all of the ring technique of volume body and head combinations that have been the trademark of her 14-0 record. Under the direction of coaches Al Mitchell and Kay Koroma (along with Manny Robles), Mayer was simply too fast, too strong and too busy for Brodnicka who had trouble keeping Mayer off of her all night.

In the end, Mayer (14-0, 5 KO’s) captured the WBO women’s title with a UD 10 over the former world champion Brodnicka (19-1, 2 KO’s) who simply had no answer for the non-stop head and body attack of Mayer. The title was only on the line for Mayer as Brodnicka had missed weight by .1 pound at the weigh-in but in the end the better fighter walked out of the ring with the win, and the title, by scores of 99-89, 100-88, 100-88.

It was an impressive performance for Mayer who told ESPN’s Mark Kriegel that she wants to "unify right away." It is clear that while Mayer was happy with the win, this was just step #1. Mayer wants to not only be a world champion, she wants to be the seen as the best – not just one of the best, but the very best.

While Mayer must have been thrilled with the win, when the decision was announced, she appeared calm and relaxed in a posture that displayed that she knew this was going to be the outcome. All week long the quietly confident Mayer had said in interviews that she had the better skill set and would show that on fight night - and that she did.

"Eddie Hearn told me to get a belt, well, I have the WBO world title. I want to unify the titles; I want (Britain’s undefeated, WBC champion) Terry Harper next."
