Late Saturday evening, Matthew Griego edged Pilipino Jeronil Borres to capture the minor ABA Continuation flyweight championship. The bout was held at Isleta Casino outside Griego’s hometown of Albuquerque New Mexico.

Borres was a substitute for Ronnie Baldonado who had visa problems the week before the fight. Matchmaker Pat Holmes and Promoter Lenny Fresquez didn’t disappoint as they brought in a tougher opponent in Borres.

The fight was a close encounter with Griego winning the first few rounds with his boxing ability. Borres came back in the middle rounds with his aggression and power shots.

Griego, who has been eager to step up the competition, didn’t disappoint his fans and showed he can compete in the flyweight division. He boxed well, staying away from the powerful Borres, while avoiding his wild hooks.

Borres started to connect to the body in rounds three, four, five and six. His pressure seemed to put him in control of the fight, with Griego getting tagged on the ropes.

Round seven saw Griego box better and take back some control. His foot speed was the key along with his boxing ability. Borres attempted to catch Griego with looping rights and lefts, but Griego got out of harm’s way.

The last three rounds were subjective. It was the power of Borres versus the speed of Griego. Both fighters showed true heart and determination with neither fighter disappointing nor backing down from each other.

The local judges seemed to favor the boxing of Griego. Scores were 95-95, a draw, 96-94, and a ridiculous 99-91. Greigo, now 11-0 with 8 KO’s, showed he is an up and coming flyweight with a bright future. Though the loser on the judges’ scorecards, Borres(11-5-1, 6 KOs) revealed he too is someone not to be taken lightly.

I say let them do it again and give the fans another great show, but this time with neutral judges. The fighters and fans deserve it.

Undercard action:

Bryant McClain, 6-3-3, shut out the 5’2 Lorenzo Benavidez 60-54 an all three scorecards. McClain erased a draw the two had in 2019, winning easy in a battle of super middleweights.

Clinton Chavez remained unbeaten at 4-0 with and easy first round ko of Luis Mares.

Jordane Garcia and Jozette Cotton fought to a four round draw in women’s action.

Mario Gonzales raised his record to 3-0, destroying Brad Grellck.

In the opening fight of the night, Travis Foster won a unanimous decision over Nikko Nathan.
