WBO super featherweight world champion Jamel Herring won the biggest fight of his career, knocking out former two-division titleholder Carl Frampton in round six at Caesars Palace in Dubai Saturday night.

The time was 1:40 of round six.

In round one, the much taller Herring, with a reach advantage of six inches, pumped his jab. He fired a few combinations. One connected. Frampton, favored going into the bout based on his reputation, circled to his left. He’d need to get inside to score – which meant he’d have to eat punches.

Frampton went to the body in round two. Herring,35, jabbed and landed a left to the body. Frampton tried to close the gap, but Herring made him pay, strafing the former champion with left hands. Frampton touched Herring with a right.

Herring (23-2, 11 KOs) landed a solid left to the face in round three. Frampton was pressing the fight, but not scoring much. Herring was beating him to the punch. Frampton connected with a right to the body. Herring landed an uppercut in round four. Frampton forced him to the ropes and landed a few blows. Herring, bleeding from cut over his right eye, kept working. Frampton landed a left on the eye.

Frampton (28-3, 16 KOs) connected with a chopping left in round five. He was coming on until a straight left deposited him on the seat of his pants. Frampton,34, got up and fought back. Herring patiently worked downstairs. Herring continued his calculated performance in round six. A huge uppercut collapsed Frampton.

He beat the count but was obviously hurt. Herring went to work, clipping Frampton with left hands. Frampton staggered back ready to fall again until his corner threw in the towel.

“My last outing wasn’t my best,” said the classy Herring. “Even the cut, I wasn’t going to quit. Carl Frampton is a great champion.”

A teary-eyed Frampton announced his retirement after the fight.

"He was the better man," Frampton said.
