Rising cruiserweight prospect DeAngelo Leachman seeks to extend both his winning and knockout streaks on April 30 at Oak Grove Racing, Gaming, and Hotel in Kentucky. The heavy-handed cruiserweight has been a regular crowd-pleaser on numerous Tri-Star Boxing promotions since he debuted. Leachman will take on Deon Ronny Hale in a bout scheduled for six rounds.

Leachman, dubbed “The Memphis Madman” in the professional ranks, has built a perfect 8-0 record with all of his bouts ending by knockout inside of three rounds. In his most recent performance, Leachman stepped up in class and leveled Lamont Capers in three rounds at home in Memphis. Leachman had his chin tested in round two.

That made him mad, so Leachman dropped and stopped Capers in the very next round. Yet, if you ask him, Leachman has his own view of his style in the ring.

“I am a boxer first,” Leachman stated. “I use the jab. Without it, you have nothing. Hit and not get hit. Now it can get ugly. Then, I bite down and go get ‘em. I’m what they call a Boxer-Puncher.”

Leachman, 30, comes from Memphis, TN in area known as the Orange Mound. He’s a bit of a fitness nut and operates Memphis Madman Fitness. Leachman trains with Aaron “Showtyme” Anderson, but has also benefitted from the tutelage of Sugar Hill Steward. As an amateur, Leachman cut his teeth under Brian Hall and Reginald Foster at the Memphis Police Department Boxing Gym. He built his boxing foundation competing in the Detroit and National Golden Gloves tournaments.

“I was incarcerated for much of my youth,” Leachman recalled. “Fighting was second nature to me. After my mom died on my eighteenth birthday, a family member told me about MPD Boxing Gym. I have never looked back since. I didn’t grow up boxing, but I grew up fighting from the streets to the ring.”

Leachman has continued his education in the professional ranks and has spent time in training camps with Tyson Fury, Adonis Stevenson, Anthony Dirrell, and Tony Harrison. He acknowledges studying video of James Toney and Evander Holyfield, but enjoys watching Vasyl Lomachenko today.

“I am very proud of my victories, but I don’t have a best win yet,” Leachman explained. “I have a lot in store. It’s the acknowledgement of hard work paying off. When you win, you never get enough. You want to keep winning. I get happy and high off that excitement. Losing [as an amateur] hurts. You learn who your team is. Most of all, you learn it’s a lesson. Suck it up and correct your wrongs.”

Leachman knows he’s at the beginning of his journey and has kept a level head. He’s turned from fighting to boxing. He’s got a story to tell and he’s using his fists to pen that narrative.

“Boxing is a platform to me,” Leachman reasoned. “You are fighting for something bigger than yourself. You’re fighting for your community, your family, your livelihood, your culture. My goal is to reach and teach those in need of guidance. To let everyone know nothing comes easy and to go out and fight for it.”

Leachman will face one of his most experienced opponents to date in Hale. Hale has more than twice the professional bouts as “The Memphis Madman”. Hale has fought World Heavyweight Title challenger Dominic Breazeale and unbeaten prospect Hasim Rahman Jr., whom he held to a majority decision.
