Benavidez would love the fight but might

bide his time to wait on a much more lucrative bout

Is it too soon for undefeated WBA champ David Morrell to fight the more experienced (fellow undefeated) David Benavidez? If Morrell has his way, they will be in the ring sooner than later.

Benavidez would love the fight but might bide his time to wait on a much more lucrative bout with superstar Canelo Alvarez.

Recently, Minneapolis-based Cuban, WBA ’regular’ super middleweight champion David Morrell (10-0, 9 KO’s) drilled Sena Agbeko (28-3, 22 KO’s) in 2 rounds on Saturday, December 16, at a sold-out “The Armory” in downtown Minneapolis.

While Agbeko had the physique and pre-fight confidence of a winner, it was all Morrell on fight night.

Morrell, an amazing story who was a world champ by his 3rd fight and just made his 6th title defense in 10 fights, is now being discussed as a possible opponent for division star David Benavidez.

After the fight, Morrell supporters were quick to embrace the idea of a Morrell-Benavidez fight. More cautious Morrell backers might be concerned that it is a bit too early for the young champion to take on the likes of Benavidez who has18 more fights, 15 more KOs, 7 world title fights, and much more experience at the top level.

In a recent interview, Benavidez’s trainer and father Jose said he likes the fight. He also acknowledged that Morrell is “a very good fighter who is getting better all the time”.

But, he also feels that Morrell might need more seasoning against some of the divisions’ tougher, more experienced fighters.

“I think David Morrell’s a great fighter, but at the end of the day, I think they should put him to fight fighters that are known that could take him into deep waters and see what he does. I think he should fight a Caleb Plant, he should fight Anthony Dirrell, or maybe even ‘Boo Boo’ Andrade," said Benavidez.

Without mentioning the money fight with Alvarez, Jose made it clear that if a Canelo fight didn’t happen, they would welcome a Morrell fight.

“We’ll fight him right now; I think David can stop him.”

If Morrell, nothing if not confident, has his way he and Benavidez will happen in 2024.

“It’s my time. It’s my year, and I’m looking forward to a good 2024,” said Morrell. “In 2024, I want to fight Benavidez. One hundred percent."
