Carl Frampton vs. Jamel Herring: Toss-up fight between two great guys

British odds makers (by far the best) are slightly with Frampton which surprises him and me.  One of these guys must go home/stay home after this fight, because their career will be on intensive care.

Herring vs. Frampton

Particulars: This Saturday 3 April, 2021, from exotic Caesars Bluewaters, Dubai, it’s Carl “The Jackal’” Frampton vs. Jamel ‘Semper Fi’ Herring for Herring’s WBO strap. EPSN 2 USA, Channel 5 and free, in Britain.

Background: Two easy-to-like fighters, smart, down-to-earth. Herring, a Marine with long years of service to his country wanted an even bigger challenge. No disrespect to the mighty Marines but I think Professional Boxing is even more challenging. Am I right/wrong? Frampton, the kid with a single street separating him and GBH (grievous, bodily harm) with both sides – warring Catholics and Protestants available to harm him. Two really good guys – both as tough as it gets, period.

All that aside, this is a fight. As British boxing coverage, once the best, gets worse and worse, I’ve heard Frampton’s athleticism, skills and ‘fitness,’ touted for years. Okay, he’s in great shape. Great skills and athleticism? I just haven’t seen it.

Frampton stands up way too straight and he keeps his arms extended way too long. He’s late in other words, constantly, in getting his guard back up. He’s still unmarked so, he must be doing something right defensively, granted. His combination punching is dominated by the Ol’ one two – straight punches, but not quick. I think of Carl as a super fit, well-schooled craftsman, not an enormous boxing talent. Frampton himself, said just days ago, he wasn’t sure he had the talent after boxing since age 7, to become a three-weight world champion – by defeating Herring.

Herring – besides his surname, would seem to have all the advantages – fresher (though slightly older) quicker, and in my crazed, I guess, opinion, better competition. Oh, he’s also a southpaw with enormous height and reach advantages.

BUT…somehow Herring – who gives the impression of a special talent, lost twice in very ugly fashion: Russian Denis Shafikov beat him down before his own corner stopped it – and a year later by UD to a Ladarious Miller in a fight he wasn’t competitive in. How did THAT happen?

Fighters Grades: (Speed, Power, Defense, Reach, Age, Stamina, Experience)

Carl Frampton: B B- B C+ C B+ B- (Average of all) B- (2.7)

Jamel Herring: B B- B- B B- B B (Average of all) B- (2.9)

Reality check: I wrote of Frampton before his bout with Donaire, two years ago: “He also is, I feel, UGH – one of these Thirty Somethings just a bit happy too happy to sit on laurels that aren’t all that awesome. Yes, the Santa Cruz win was tremendous. No, nothing else he’s done is remotely close.

Frampton did beat all-time great, Donaire, fair enough. I like him. He’s cool and smart and as real as it gets. But this is boxing – not which two guys (both Herring and Frampton) would I love to have some beers with?

And what of Mr. Check-Hook, himself, the very smooth and athletic Herring, another great guy? He’s 35 and at his peak. He’s got a lot of athleticism. Yet – he was demolished by Shafikov and looked freakin’ lousy against Miller a year later.

Both these guys are therefore somewhat suspect. Making this seemingly an even contest.

British odds makers (by far the best) are slightly with Frampton which surprises him and me. One of these guys must go home/stay home after this fight, because their career will be on intensive care.

Fight and Prediction: I’m guessing Frampton has a slight point at least about Herring’s late arrival in Dubai and trouble making the weight. But, I think Herring is at this stage, clearly the superior fighter. Fitness – no matter what British announcers might say, is not enough to seize championships.

Hard to call! As I must, I say Herring ekes out a clear, close, uninspiring UD.
