Cork’s Callum crushed it again in Commerce.

This past Friday, Cork, Ireland’s California-based junior middleweight prospect Callum Walsh (7-0, 6 KOs), scored a TKO 4 over the vastly more experienced Carson Jones (43-16-3, 31 KOs), of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

The bout was the main event of the 360 Promotions “Hollywood Fight Night” show at the Commerce Casino, in Commerce, California. The fights were also streamed live on UFC Fight Pass.

While a fighter with only 7 bouts doesn’t usually garner much response beyond, ‘a guy to keep your eye on’, Walsh is fast building a following in California as an exciting and fan-friendly fighter. He is not only turning heads in California, but word is traveling back to his native Ireland that the Emerald Isle could soon see him contending for a major title. This is certainly the goal for Walsh, a fighter who has his eyes on the big prize. He is extremely motivated, confident, and disciplined and if he keeps showing improvement at the rate he is, a world title fight is something in his future. With the win Friday night, he picked up the WBC Silver super welterweight title.

While Walsh was the favorite, it is certainly a step-up assignment as 62 fight veteran Jones was undefeated in his last 3 bouts going into the fight and had faced a long list of contenders and champions in his career.

Walsh took control right from the get-go and had Jones in a protective, defensive posture from the first bell. A strong, and non-stop offensive attack to the head and body had Jones backing up most of the fight and saw him eventually dropped with body shots, a strong part of Walsh’s arsenal.

A cut to Walsh’s eye from an accidental headbutt may keep him out of the ring for a bit but look for promoter Tom Loeffler to get him under the lights at least twice more this year.

After the fight, Walsh was pleased with his performance and was looking to bigger and better things down the road.

“It was a good victory. Nobody had done that to him before”, he said. “I had to make a statement and let people know that I am the real deal. I feel very good about my performance but there is always room for improvements to be made”, said Walsh.

And while the warm climes of southern California are where he is now, like any boxer away from home, he dreams of sharing any success with his family, friends, and fans back in Ireland.

“This win is big for Ireland. I have a taste for the belts now, I want to keep working towards the next one. I’ll just keep working and keep going. They tell me who I will be fighting, and I’ll be ready”, he said. “I do feel like I am the next face of Irish boxing. I want to win them (belts) over here and bring them back to my own country. So, I do feel a responsibility to win for my country.”
