Welterweights Brandon Higgins and Brandon Berry brought a common first name and sizable fan bases to the Castleton Banquet and Conference Center on Friday.
Higgins, from Chelmsford, Massachusetts, stayed at close range and pressured Berry, of West Forks, Maine, for most of the fight to win a 10-round unanimous decision.
Martha Tremblay, Eddie Scuncio, and Robert Paolino all scored the fight 100-90 for Higgins, now 10-3 with five knockouts. Berry dropped to 25-7-2 with 18 knockouts.
Though he said it wasn’t his plan, the 29-year-old Higgins spent most of the fight right in front of Berry with Berry’s back on the ropes.
“I actually wanted to fight more mid-range,” said Highins, who was a high school wrestler on one of the top programs in Massachusetts as well as a three-time New England Golden Gloves champion. “I smother my punches and I did that at times tonight. He’s really tough and tried get get me gassed but I don’t gas.”
Berry created some space in the fourth and fifth round and was able to use his jab at times but Higgins’ pressure was a little too much.
“I kind of never got going,” said the 35-year-old Berry. “He was crisper and has good conditioning, but Brandon Higgins always has good conditioning.”
