Harking back to Johnny Tapia and Danny Romero, local unbeaten flyweights Abraham Perez and Matthew Griego will do battle on August 10th. The Top Rank/ESPN card features former bantamweight champion Angelo Leo facing IBF featherweight champion Luis Alberto Lopez.

Although not the same magnitude as Tapia vs. Romero, it’s a fight the fans are anxious to see, as both Perez and Griego have continued to improve.

Perez is 10-0, scoring 5 KOs. Last year, the 2020 Olympic trials winner won the IBA flyweight title and recently the WBC Silver Flyweight title.

Griego, 14-0, 10 KOs, captured the NABA Flyweight title last August.

Perez and Griego have three common opponents, Jeronil Borres, Gilberto Mendoza, and Alejandro Moreno. Griego defeated Borres by a majority decision in 2020, and Mendoza, via a unanimous decision in 2022,

Perez halted Borres with a 3rd-round TKO in April 2023, then halted Mendoza with an 8th-round stoppage in July 2023.  Perez decisioned Moreno while Griego knocked him out.

It’s a fight that is perfect for both stages in their careers. Griego has been professional since 2016 and has wanted bigger fights and on TV to get to the next level. Perez has been fighting since 2021.

The fight may have the title of “Civil War," yet it’s far from that. Both Perez and Griego are respectful to each other and have not spoken negatively. The fans of both seem to be more at war with social media posts.

Up for grabs is the IBF/USBA Flyweight title, and the chance to progress in the professional rinks.

And local bragging rights.

We will have stories on both as the fight gets closer.
