Same Broner, different day: Adrien Broner judged controversial winner over Jovanie Santiago

Broner ’wins’ first fight in four years.

Bad decisions hurt boxing.

I always feel for a fighter who, usually unknown, and given little chance to win, does everything in a match to win - only to lose by what can conservatively be called questionable scoring.

Take Adrien Broner versus little-known Jovanie Satiago last Saturday night. Santaigo threw and landed double the punches that Broner did. He made the fight. But still, he lost.

World champions Terence Crawford and Jermall Charlo were shocked. Should they have been? No. The only chance the unknown has is to score a resounding knockout. See Mauricio Lara blasting out Josh Warrington a few weeks ago.

Before Lara fought Warrington, Zelfa Barrett was judged the winner over respected veteran Kiko Martinez. The scoring of the fight was ridiculous. Two judges had Barrett winning by seven points. The other by five. Martinez did everything but get his hand raised.

Even promoter Eddie Hearn was frustrated by the scorecards stating, “How are we supposed to be able to keep bringing world-class international fighters over here when they don’t get the credit they deserve?"

Deserve isn’t in play. Santiago deserved the win over Broner, but didn’t get it.

Former champion Broner had promised before the fight that he was a new man. Nope. After the bout, he was very unhappy with Showtime analyst Steve Farhood who felt Santiago had won.

He told Farhood to go f*** himself.

Classy.

Same Broner, different day.
