TwitterFacebook

By Andrew Rivera: Albuquerque welterweight Josh Torres used a vicious body attack on Francisco Castro, halting him to collect the 20th win of his career late Saturday night at the Manuel Lujan Building in Albuquerque, New Mexico in the headline Expo Explosion 3 main event.

Castro came into his bout with Torres having stopped 23 in is 28 wins, yet Torres met him center ring from the opening bell to show Castillo that his power would have little effect in the match up.

Torres would start his attack early and often, never taking a step back against Mexico’s Castro, although Castro was able to land a few good right hands they did no damage on the granite chinned Torres, who has never been put to the canvas.

Castillo may have had his best moments in the bout in round six when he backed up Torres for a split second landing two good rights, yet it was Torres who took the fight back to the center to continue his Julio Caesar Chavez like body attack on Castillo.

In the eighth round Torres was now walking through Castillo 28-10 with 23knockouts, landing g hard left-right on Castillo put end the night at 1:16.

“I had great preparation for this fight.” said Torres, “We had a game plan and it worked and that led us to victory.”

In preparation for his bout Torres was asked to help Yordenis Ugas prior to his March 9th title challenge against WBC Champion Shawn Porter, Ugas lost a disputed decision to Porter, but Torres was happy to get in rounds against one of the with Ugas, they liked how I sparred and I gave them more rounds than I was originally there to work.” stated Torres. Torres now has a few opportunities coming his way after raising his record to 20-6-1 with 12 knockouts.

Torres has caught the eye of Top Rank promoters and may have something lined up in late summer, yet it is the local welterweights who seem to keep calling out Torres. Earlier in the night Jose Luis Sanchez halted Joe Gomez, hoping to secure a second fight the Torres, both fighter Torres has defeated previous but both had been seeking rematches.

“I hope to have something in the works with Top Rank, if not maybe I’ll keep busy fighting here giving the fans a good show against someone here. I really don’t gain anything by fighting the guy’s locally but to stay busy maybe.” Stated Torres.

In the co main event Matthew Esquibel raised his record to 12-0-1 with 5 knockouts captured a 6 round unanimous decision over Willie Villenueva, 11-6-1 (5ko’s) Esquibel used his height and reach to keep Villenueva at bay most of the night, boxing his wat to possibly his best win in the pro ranks.

Jose Luis Sanchez halted veteran welterweight Joe Gomez in the 5th round capturing his most impressive victory to date, Sanchez put Gomez down twice in the fight with right hands, promoting the referee to halt the action.

In raising his record to 9-1 with 4 knockouts, Sanchez now hopes to avenge his lone loss to Torres earlier in his career. It is a fight Legacy Promotions has tried to make as well for local fight fans.

Undercard action

Aaron Angel Perez, who raised his record to 7-0 (5kos’s ) continues to slowly step it up in competition, although he had an easy time with 54 fight veteran Isaias Martin Cardona, halting his in the 1st round. Perez each time out has picked veterans to gain experience, next fight I hope to see him get more rounds to see if he has the goods to further in his young career.

Amy Salinas 2-0, won a four round decision over Danielle Saldanhi (2-2, 1ko)

Christian Castillo (3-0, 3kos) defeated Albert Jones in Jones debut, with a seconds round tko.

Lorenzo Benevidez (2-1) keeps getting better each time out in defeating Rico Urquizo (5-7, 3kos) with a four round unanimous decision.

The fight card was promoted by Legacy Promotions.
