JEFF HORN OPEN TO MANNY PACQUIAO REMATCH

Former WBO welterweight champion Jeff ‘The Hornet’ Horn 19-1-1 (13) would welcome the opportunity to prove his 12-round unanimous points victory over Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao 61-7-2 (39) was more than just a fluke, according to his promoter Dean Lonergan.

The 30-year-old former schoolteacher roughed up the eight-division world champion at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium in July 2017 to claim an unexpected unanimous decision win by scores of 117-111 and 115-113 twice.

Southpaw Pacquiao, 40, scored a 12-round points win over American Adrien Broner 33-4-1 (24) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday night to keep his late career resurgence going.

After the fight Pacquiao again called for a rematch against old foe Floyd Mayweather Jr 50-0 (27), who retired in 2017.

“In his last five fights, Manny Pacquiao has only been beaten once, by Jeff Horn,” Horn’s promoter Dean Lonergan told Fightnews.

“Given Pacman’s last two fights, a destruction of [Lucas] Matthysse and an easy win over Broner, Manny has shown he has plenty of gas left in the tank. It also shows that Jeff Horn didn’t beat an old Manny Pacquiao.

“If Pacquiao wants to build towards a big fight with Mayweather, and make May-Pac II more credible than it currently is, and with more credibility, it makes more money, surely Manny has to revisit Jeff Horn before a Mayweather fight.”

Pacquiao-Horn was a blood-soaked affair after an early clash of heads opened up a nasty cut on Pacquiao’s scalp that leaked claret for the duration of the contest. After starting fast Horn relinquished control in the mid-rounds and was battered from pillar to post in a one-sided ninth frame but survived to finish strongly in the championship rounds.

“Pacquiao versus Horn was a brutal bloody war in Brisbane and the clear winner was Jeff Horn,” continued Lonergan.

“A rematch of that fight, either in Las Vegas or Brisbane, where Pacquiao gets the opportunity to avenge that loss, should be a requirement by Floyd, along with the boxing public and broadcaster, to give a possible May-Pac II the credibility it needs to go big.

“Because right now that loss without being turned into a W stands in the way of a big payday for both fighters.”

It comes after Lonergan earlier confirmed an offer to face Kell Brook in the UK.

"I’ve got a text into Eddie at the moment, my matchmaker has an email and a phone call into Eddie, we love this fight, to have Jeff Horn fight Kell Brook,” Lonergan said to Sky Sports.

"If you were going to do it, you would definitely go to England, because the boxing market up there is on fire, and Kell Brook in Sheffield, which is where he comes from, you’re definitely going to be filling a stadium wherever you go."

Brook, 32, is coming off a 12-round points decision win over Australian Michael Zerafa 25-3 (14) in December in what was widely regarded as a subpar effort.

"We think Zerafa is a fighter that Jeff Horn would totally dominate and destroy within five or six rounds, and Kell Brook couldn’t put him away," Lonergan said.

"I saw a comment coming from Brook himself, saying a lot of people after seeing my performance against Michael Zerafa will come out of the woodwork.

"Well, we would have been there anyway, but we just look at that and go – it will be a good fight for Jeff."

Former Commonwealth 154-pound champion Zerafa 25-3 (15) hit back at the comments from Lonergan.

“I asked my manager Brendan Bourke to get me the Horn fight. He told me they weren’t interested and had bigger fights on the horizon,” said Zerafa. “I was okay with that, but coming out saying Horn would destroy me within five rounds? Lonergan has lost the plot!”

In November Horn destroyed compatriot Anthony Mundine 48-9 (28) in just 96 seconds, flattening him with a well-placed left hook at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

That victory flatters to deceive, according to Team Zerafa.

“Horn’s team are underestimating Brook and they’re definitely underestimating Michael,” said Zerafa’s coach Sam Labruna.

“Lonergan is a good business man and a good promoter but he doesn’t know a right hook from a fish hook! Jeff’s style is perfect for Zerafa and Horn’s coach Glenn Rushton hasn’t taught him anything new since the start.”

Zerafa himself was equally unimpressed with Horn’s win over the 43-year-old Sydney veteran.

“I would happily fight Horn whenever he comes to terms with the fact I’m the best super welterweight in the country,” added Zerafa.

“Jeff and his team know I’d give him fits. I’m not an outdated, old man like Mundine."

TJ DOHENY DELIVERS AT MSG, ZEROES IN ON UNIFICATION FIGHT AGAINST DANIEL ROMAN

After his thrilling victory at New York’s famed Madison Square Garden last Friday night IBF super bantamweight champion TJ Doheny 21-0 (15) is targeting a unification bout with WBA counterpart Daniel Roman 26-2-1 (10).

Doheny outboxed stubborn Japanese boxer Ryohei Takahashi 16-4-1 (6) in his maiden title defence, dropping him in the fourth before grinding him down to an 11th round stoppage at The Garden’s Hulu Theater on the undercard of the WBO middleweight title fight between champion Demetrius Andrade and challenger Artur Akavov.

The 32-year-old Australian-based Irishman, who recently signed with Matchroom Boxing USA, called on his new promoter Eddie Hearn to make the fight with Roman who was sitting ringside for the bout.

“That’s the fight I want next, that’s what we are all in it for. Danny Roman is a great fighter, he’s got the WBA. I’ve got the IBF. Let’s get it on. Eddie, you heard it. You got the order from the fighters, let’s make it happen,” said Doheny after the fight.

The southpaw champion admitted he felt a little rusty at stages during the bout after sitting on the sidelines since world championship winning effort against Ryosuke Iwassa 25-3 (16) on the road in Japan last August.

“I was shaking off a bit of rust, coming off of a thumb injury. I was about a half a second too slow on my counter punching but the main thing is I came here to defend my title for the first time and that’s exactly what I did,” said Doheny.

“Every time I hit him, I felt I was hurting him. The main thing is we got the stoppage in the end and we are moving on now.”

Doheny versus Roman is expected to take place in the United States in April.

ANDREW MOLONEY SECURES WORLD TITLE ELIMINATOR AGAINST MIGUEL GONZALEZ IN MARCH

Undefeated super flyweight contender Andrew ‘The Monster’ Moloney 18-0 (11) will enter the lion’s den when he squares off against WBA number two Miguel Gonzalez 29-1 (6) in an official WBA world title eliminator at the Gran Arena Monticello in San Francisco de Mostazal in Chile on March 22.

WBA number three Moloney is coming off a career-best win over Panamanian former world champion Luis Concepcion 37-7 (26) last September who he stopped in the 10th round of a 12-round bout after dominating the fight.

The 28-year-old Melbournian, who is now based out of Kingscliff on the New South Wales north coast, is the twin brother of former world title challenger Jason Moloney 17-1 (14) who acquitted himself well against IBF bantamweight champion Emmanuel Rodriguez 19-0 (12) in the World Boxing Super Series last October, losing by split decision in a close and competitive fight.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist is chasing a world title shot against England’s undefeated WBA champion Kal Yafai 25-0 (15).

GEORGE KAMBOSOS REMAINS UNDEFEATED WITH DOMINANT POINTS WIN ON PACQUIAO-BRONER UNDERCARD

Lightweight contender ‘Ferocious’ George Kambosos 16-0 (9) was too classy for US-based Filipino Rey Perez 24-11 (8) on the Manny Pacquiao versus Adrien Broner undercard, easily outscoring the journeyman over eight rounds at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday night.

The 25-year-old Sydneysider, who is trained by LA-based Aussie Justin Fortune, won every round on all three judges’ scorecards to secure the victory 80-72.

Perez, 28, was coming off back-to-back KO wins over Roberto Marroquin and Christian Gonzalez in the past six months but didn’t have the tools to bother the slick-boxing Kambosos over the 24-minutes of the contest.

The outspoken Kambosos delivered a glowing assessment of his own performance on social media.

“A boxing masterclass of speed, power, precision, defence, stamina, footwork and dominance over Rey Perez who was coming into the fight with two huge KO wins over a world title challenger and a world-rated lightweight,” Kambosos posted.

The WBO number nine and IBF number 11 ranked 135-pounder has been used as a sparring partner by Pacquiao in his last three training camps.

LUCAS BROWNE KNOCKS BACK JARRELL MILLER OFFER TO PURSUE OTHER OPTIONS IN THE UK

Australian heavyweight contender Lucas ‘Big Daddy’ Browne 27-1 (24) has revealed he knocked back an offer to face undefeated American Jarrell ‘Big Baby’ Miller 23-0-1 (20) in New York on January 18, saying that he was only given a fortnight to prepare.

“The offer to fight Jarrell Miller was made with under two weeks to the fight. It meant I’d have hardly any preparation along with a hell of a plane ride. So really, it didn’t make sense,” the 39-year-old Browne said in an interview with World Boxing News.

“I have no problem with fighting anyone. But at 140kgs and fit, I’d need more than just over a week’s notice to fight Jarrell Miller in the United States.”

Browne was stopped in six rounds by leading heavyweight contender Dillian Whyte in London in March and is now in a rebuilding phase of his career with back-to-back knockout victories over limited opposition under his belt.

He sees his future in the UK where he has fought six times already during his pro career.

“I’ve got three of four fights in the UK lined up. So a silly loss against Jarrell Miller made no sense,” Browne continued. “We are looking at Dave Allen and David Price. I have to be ready when the call comes.”

Browne and Allen have engaged in online banter across social media platforms for some months. In his last outing Allen 16-4-2 (13) stopped Ariel Esteban Bracamonte at the end of the seventh round of a scheduled 10-round bout in November.

Meanwhile 35-year-old veteran Price 23-6 (19) bounced back from stoppage losses to Russians Alexander Povetkin and Sergey Kuzman in March and September respectively with a fourth round TKO of Tom Little in late December.

DENNIS HOGAN COULD BE JUST MONTHS AWAY FROM HIS WORLD TITLE SHOT AGAINST JAIME MUNGUIA

WBO junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia 31-0 (26) has outlined plans to box four times in 2019.

The powerful 22-year-old Mexican is scheduled to face Japan’s Takeshi Inoue 13-0-1 (7) at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas this Saturday night before chasing unification bouts with WBA and IBF champion Jarrett Hurd 23-0 (16) and recently crowned WBC ruler Tony Harrison 28-2 (21) later in the year.

But before those fights can happen he must first honour his mandatory commitment to the WBO by facing their number one contender Dennis ‘Hurricane’ Hogan 28-1 (7).

“After this fight, it looks like I will have a WBO mandatory bout against Dennis Hogan. But I would still like to unify the titles at 154-pounds with the other champions,” Munguia said in an interview with Fightnews this week.

The 33-year-old Brisbane-based Irishman is coming off an entertaining 12-round victory over Perth-based Welshman Jamie Weetch 12-3-1 (5) in December.

SAMUEL COLOMBAN COMES UP SHORT IN OPBF TITLE TILT IN SOUTH KOREA

Veteran Samuel Colomban 25-11-1 (11) was knocked out in the seventh round of a 12-round bout against Jung Kyoung Lee 7-2-1 (3) in a fight for the vacant OPBF junior middleweight title at the 88 Gymnasium in Seoul, South Korea on January 19. The time of the stoppage was 2:47.

Lee becomes just the second person to stop Colomban after former WBO welterweight champion Jeff Horn knocked him out in a single round in just his fifth pro bout in a contest for the vacant Australian 147-pound title.

“I wish I was able to fulfil your hopes of winning my fight in Korea,” the classy Colomban posted on social media after the fight. “Sadly, it didn’t go my way. I gave it my all, fought till the end, but previous injuries prevailed and deservedly, my opponent won.”

Colomban is the reigning national champ at 154-pounds after defeating Adrian Rodriguez on points in his hometown in September 2017.

ZAC DUNN SET TO RETURN AGAINST WORLD-RANKED OPPONENT IN APRIL

WBO number eight ranked super middleweight Zac ‘Dynamo’ Dunn 27-1 (22) returns to action on April 5 when he takes on WBO number 13 Patrick ‘The Patriot’ Rokohl 16-0 (12) of Germany in defence of his WBA Oceania title over 10-rounds at the Melbourne Pavilion in Flemington on a Big Time Boxing show.

The 27-year-old Melburnian is coming off a sixth round stoppage of American Bo Gibbs Jr 22-2 (8) at the same venue in November.

DEEDEE ‘THE SILENCER’ HOBBS SIGNS SIX FIGHT DEAL WITH DDP SPORTS

Popular Queensland slugger Deedee ‘The Silencer’ Hobbs 8-0 (5) has signed a six-fight deal with Brisbane-based promotional outfit DDP Sports.

The WBA number six ranked lightweight has become a staple of DDP Sports cards, with her bloody eight-round war against New Zealand’s Baby Nansen 7-4-1 in December becoming a late contender for Australian Fight of the Year.

"We are excited to add Deedee to our growing stable,” said DDP Sports head of boxing operations Steven Wijangco.

“Deedee is leading the way for female boxing in Australia right now and we have some big plans for her over the next two years.

“Deedee has fought on three out of the five DDP shows so we have invested in her career already, but by making it official we are now both committed to working together long term."

Hobbs, who wrecks cars for a living when not wrecking opponents in the ring, is targeting a shot at the winner of the unification bout between WBA and IBF champion between Katie Taylor 12-0 (5) of Ireland and WBO boss Rose Volante 14-0 (8) of Brazil that will take place at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia on March 15.

TIM TSZYU HEADLINES BIG SYDNEY SHOW AT THE HORDERN PAVILION ON FEBRUARY 8

The first big show of 2019 kicks off when Matthew Rose’s No Limit Boxing Promotions presents a huge 11-fight card at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney on February 8.

Headlining the card will be the return of 154-pound prospect Tim Tszyu 11-0 (9) in his first 12-round bout when he takes on former Commonwealth welterweight champion Denton Vassell 25-5 (11). The 24-year-old son of former undisputed junior welterweight champion Kostya Tszyu is fast making a name for himself in the stacked junior middleweight division.

Meanwhile rugby league fans will be looking forward to the heavyweight clash between Cronulla Sharks captain Paul Gallen 8-0 (4) and former NRL bad boy John Hopoate 12-5 (11), while boxing fans will be salivating at the prospect of middleweight Mark Lucas 9-0 (3) clashing with Rocky Jerkic 16-1 (13) over eight rounds and talented Queensland super middleweight Adam Copland 4-0 (2) stepping up in class to face Sydney puncher Mateo Tapia 8-0 (5) over eight.

In other action world-rated light heavyweight Damien ‘Super’ Hooper 14-1 (9) and undefeated heavyweight Willis Meehan 7-0 (6) will fight in separate bouts while Ben Savva 9-1 (3) will face Luke Travers 4-11-2 over six.

The card will be televised in Australia on Foxtel’s Main Event channel.
