EXCLUSIVE: Badou Jack of all trades - why he's promoting in Dubai

Badou Jack tells Danny Flexen about his big Knockout Night show and what he has learned from Floyd Mayweather

You don’t spend the majority of your top-flight boxing career under Mayweather Promotions without inheriting some large-scale ambition. Badou Jack, who won titles at both super-middleweight and light-heavy, has sat at the learning tree occupied by Floyd Mayweather and allied those teachings with his own ingenuity. This has already led to a charity focusing on underprivileged children and a nutrition company making replacement meals for refugees, but now Jack invades Dubai as a promoter, for Knockout Night, on May 3 at the FIVE Palm Jumeirah Dubai, from 4pm (UK), 11am (ET) and 8am (PT), a show that can be viewed via Fite.tv.

“We’ve been back and forth for a year-and-a-half, kinda planning it, making moves here and there,” Jack explains. “We’re ready to make boxing huge in this region. I think Dubai is the place to be. You can’t bring Manny Pacquiao or Amir Khan here straight away, or the really big fights, you’ve gotta build it first. I’m very excited.
“Floyd Mayweather is in my corner and he taught me a lot. To strive to be a perfectionist, to work hard and be patient. There’s gonna be ups and downs but you’ve got to keep doing what you’re doing. To be patient is the biggest thing he taught me.”

While a great deal of Jack’s time has been consumed by organising a VIP event that features both kickboxing and traditional boxing, topped by UK prospect Viddal Riley, he insists this does not mean his active career is winding down. Last seen suffering an horrific cut en route to a clear defeat versus Marcus Browne in January, Jack is keen to get going once again.

“It’s unfortunate what happened in that last fight, the cut from the headbutt, but the doctor actually said I’m fine to start sparring now,” Badou stated. “My focus is on May 3 and after the show it’s Ramadan for one month so I’ll be fasting, then I’ll start training for my next fight. I could fight at cruiserweight if the right opportunity comes, or a rematch with Marcus Browne. I was kinda flat in that fight, a little bit dehydrated, but he was the better man that night.”
