Canelo Alvarez (53-1-2, 36KOs) vs. Billy Joe Saunders (29-0, 14KOs) was originally scheduled for May 2nd at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

The fight has been pushed back due to the coronavirus, but in all likelihood the 168-pound championship bout will end up being cancelled. The boxing business has taken a major blow, as no major fights have taken place for the last two months and the sport will continue to be on hold for the foreseeable future.

This means that the most lucrative fights must happen immediately in order for the business to make as quick of a recovery as possible. Therefore, Saunders will be replaced by Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (40-1-1, 35KOs) as Canelo’s next opponent.

DAZN must rebound after several months of no live-fight content. GGG and Canelo are aligned with DAZN, and GGG was signed for the purpose of eventually facing Canelo for a third time. There is no time to marinate this fight any further. Without a doubt, the online streaming platform has taken a major hit, and they must hit the ground running once boxing returns.

Many people in boxing don’t believe that GGG will be as difficult for Canelo to face as he was in their previous two fights. Golovkin is now 38-years-old, and most recently won a razor-thin decision over Sergey Derevyanchenko in a bloody bout. The fight was closer than many predicted, and it likely gave Canelo greater confidence that he could defeat GGG handily in a third match.

Unfortunately, the undefeated Saunders will be left out, and his chance-of-a-lifetime to defeat Canelo won’t come to fruition. Networks and promoters will be desperate to gain as many short-term rewards as possible once action resumes.
