Rolando Romero gifted a title

According to the WBA, yes. According to most others, no. 

Dubious is the word to describe his “title-winning” effort over Ismael Barroso. 

But wait. WHY was Romero even fighting for a title? 

Wasn’t he knocked out in his last fight?

The answer is yes. 

Ridiculous, but not according to Romero. 

"I’m Rolly,” he told ESPN. “I get special Rolly privileges. Sorry that I’m getting a title shot ... but also I’m by far one of the most entertaining boxers in the sport. You don’t wanna give me title shots, don’t watch my fights."

Sad.

His second shot went down Saturday night in Sin City. 

Speaking of going down, Romero was down in round three. His performance was sub-par.

In round nine, Barroso was on the floor, not from a punch, but a push. Seconds later, referee Tony Weeks stopped the fight, even though Barroso was defending himself and throwing back. 

“I think it was an injustice to stop the fight,” said Barroso. “I was landing the better shots. It was a push on the first knockdown. It wasn’t a big blow or anything. The referee just stopped the fight, and he didn’t say anything. You can see it clearly. I’m the one who’s hitting him. There was nothing clear that he hit me with. I don’t understand why they stopped the fight.”

Veteran referee Weeks hasn’t commented. Likely never will.  

Barroso was ahead on all cards by scores of 78-73, 77-74, and 76-75.

Terrible. Weeks blew it. 

Boxing loves to shoot itself in the foot, but the aim is getting higher, and fans are getting fed up. 

Right the ship or it will ultimately sink.
