At the beginning of the summer, Mike Marshall was looking forward to the highest profile fight of his career, facing Victor Vykhryst on the undercard of the Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder III bout in Las Vegas.

When the Fury/Wilder bout was postponed until Oct. 9, so was Marshall’s fight. The postponement also gave the reigning New England heavyweight champion a chance to fit in one more fight.

On Saturday, Aug. 28, Marshall got in 10 rounds, out-pointing Jose Corral of Mexico at the New England Sport Center in a non-title bout.

All three judges, Martha Tremblay, John Madfis and Sonya Morey, scored the fight 100-89 for Marshall, a native of New York now living in Danbury, Conn. Referee Kevin Hope deducted a point from Corral in the sixth round for hitting behind the head.

There were no knockdowns. Marshall (6-1-1, 4 knockouts) controlled the fight with his jab and straight right hand., with each round following a similar pattern.

“I give myself a C-plus,” said Marshall. “It was OK. I have some things to work on. I wanted to sit him down, but he has a lot of experience. This was my eighth pro fight and he’s had 48.”

Corral dropped to 20-28 with 12 knockouts.
