Is Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin III still compelling?

Canelo Alvarez (54-1-2, 36KOs) and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (41-1-1, 36KOs) both dominated their most recent opponents. Canelo scored a unanimous decision victory over Callum Smith and “GGG” earned a stoppage win over Kamil Szeremeta in the seventh round.

Since fighting GGG for a second time in 2018, Canelo has won titles at 168 and 175, while Golovkin has remained at 160 and picked up another championship belt.

Golovkin may have to move up in weight for a third fight against Canelo for the bout to come to fruition. Canelo has implied that he is most comfortable at 168, and he will likely force Golovkin to move up to make the fight happen.

GGG once had considerably more power than Canelo, but it is debatable whether he does at this point in their respective careers. Both are still fun fighters to watch, but fans are no longer dying to see them square off.

Their first two fights were competitive with plenty of back-and-forth action, and a majority believe that Golovkin should have been victorious in both affairs despite the first fight ending in a draw and the second with Canelo’s hand being raised.

Right now, Canelo looks better and stronger than ever, while it is hard to tell if Golovkin is still the same fighter he was when the two fought in September of 2018.

Since Canelo is arguably boxing’s biggest star, he will decide if and when a third fight happens. Canelo is currently 30 years old while Golovkin is 38, and time is ticking on fans’ interest for a third fight.

Canelo is likely at his peak, while Golovkin is still a remarkable fighter, yet on the decline. Oddsmakers will likely project that Canelo will beat Golovkin by a comfortable decision if they fight once again, and fans heavily anticipated the initial Canelo vs. GGG fight in 2017 because they believed a KO was possible.

Golovkin was unable to knock out or even knock down Canelo in their two fights, and it is even less likely that GGG will stop Canelo in a third fight. Golovkin boasts one of the best chins in boxing, and it would be a shock to many if Canelo knocked him out. The fight may still be a solid matchup, but the rivalry does not have the same momentum or intrigue that it once had.
