It’s Taylor’s wish to keep taking and winning the best fights available, and continue making history in women’s boxing.
Ireland’s Katie Taylor is the Maxboxing 2020 Female Fighter of the year.
Keeping her perfect record intact, Taylor,34, fought twice in 2020, defeating Miriam Gutierrez in November, and more importantly, winning a rugged unanimous rematch over Delfine Persoon in August.
Gutierrez was dominated by Taylor, getting dropped in the fourth round and totally overwhelmed in all the remaining rounds. Taylor (17-0, 6 KOs) tried to end the fight with every punch but Gutierrez managed to survive the onslaught of her speed and power to suffer her first loss.
In rematching Persoon, Taylor, who won Olympic gold at the 2012 games, needed a convincing win to silence critics who questioned her majority decision win in June 2019.
The August match was another war of attrition between the two champions. Taylor said before the fight she’d box more, and avoid getting drawn into a firefight. She achieved her goal, though the stronger Persoon battled relentlessly. Taylor threw the more precise and more damaging shots for the ten-round duration.
One of the differences in the second match was Taylor being able to truly hurt Persoon, breaking her nose in the second round, causing her to fight eight rounds with a broken nose, and delivering a huge cut to her right cheek. In retaliation, Persoon also left marks on Taylor, who sported a massive lump on per forehead at the end of the fight.
Scores were 98-93, and 96-94 twice.
Taylor has agreed with promoter Eddie Hearn in accepting all challenges, including discussion of MMA star Cris Cyborg. It’s Taylor’s wish to keep taking and winning the best fights available, and continue making history in women’s boxing.
