Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

On the Move: MaxBoxing World Rankings 1-12-15

By Derek Bonnett: The 2015 boxing year is underway. Now that pundits and casual fans have put their pens away after designating the best of this and that and assigning year end awards, it’s time to start all over again. The practitioners of the greatest sport on the planet wait for no one as Francisco Santana punched his ticket as the first KO of the Year candidate while cleaning the clock of Kendal Mena on ESPN. The match-up itself was a mismatch between fringe contender and last minute On the Move: MaxBoxing World Rankings 1-12-15

Pedro Guevara: Hope of Unification

By Derek Bonnett: Back in 2012, Pedro Guevara received his first world title shot. He was dropped in the opening round by then champion John Reil Casimero, but rose to his feet to see the remaining 12 rounds out only to see defeat with two judges’ cards showing the difference of only one point. Guevara did not hang his head for too long and went on to build a six fight win-streak through 2013 and 2014... Pedro Guevara: Hope of Unification

MaxBoxing's Pound For Pound Rankings Update

By Matthew Hurley: The MaxBoxing pound-for-pound list for January 2015 consists of only one significant change. Although pound-for-pound lists are mythical and certainly debatable, inactivity counts against a fighter, no matter how talented, almost as much as a loss. In December we dropped super middleweight champion Andre Ward for inactivity. Ward has not fought since November of 2013 and still has nothing scheduled. He remains off the list... MaxBoxing's 2014 Fight of the Year: Matthysse vs. Molina Jr.

By John J. Raspanti: There were a number of outstanding fights in 2014. Last August, strawweights Francisco Rodriguez Jr. and Katsunari Takayama battled for 12 rounds at the famed Arena Monterey in Monterrey, MX. Takayama had the edge in the first half of the fight. Rodriguez dug deep and battled on, eventually overtaking Takayama in the last few rounds. The give and take nature of the bout left the crowd salivating for more. MaxBoxing's 2014 knockout of the year is…

By John J. Raspanti: Oh, the knockout, the most dramatic outcome in boxing. It can happen without warning. It’s akin to being broadsided by a bus. One battered fighter is left prone on the floor while the winner, rejoices near his fallen foe. While picking the knockout of the year can be challenging, three fights come to mind. Heavyweight contender Amir Mansour has the kind of power that can knock a house down. Most know his story. Mansour lost eight years of his career in prison. In 2010, MaxBoxing's 2014 knockout of the year is…

50 Cent rips & disses Jay-Z / Video

I won’t sit here and pretend I like 50 Cent’ gangsta rap, nor will I ever think he is a scary tough thug. Some may like his music, some may even fear the man... but that is just ridiculous on both accounts. I don’t hate the guy, just not a fan of his music and how he promotes himself. With 50 Cent calling himself a boxing promoter these days, I read he has a bit of a beef with Jay-Z (also from the music industry) who is throwing his hat into the boxing ring (as a boxing 50 Cent rips & disses Jay-Z / Video

Prospect Of The Year: Oscar Valdez

Prospect Of The Year: Oscar Valdez

By Derek Bonnett: The line between Prospect and Contender is often blurred. There is no clear cut formula equating rounds, bouts, performance, and quality of opposition that can be applied to a specified rubric to assess a budding fighter’s status. The move from prospect to contender status in essence is an arrival. Sometimes it is an anticipated one and under other circumstances it can be quite the party-crashing event. In 2014, the world of boxing witnessed the development of copious Prospect Of The Year: Oscar Valdez

Knockout Of The Year: Andy Lee KO 5 John Jackson

By William Wade: Any generic trawl of youtube containing the words ‘boxing’ and ‘knockout’ will reveal a plethora of the greatest fight-stopping punches of the cinematic era. Almost every list will contain the ‘Suzy Q’ right hand of Rocky Marciano crashing into Jersey Joe Walcott’s jaw, leaving him crumbling on the ropes. More heartbreak for warrior Herrera

By John J. Raspanti: As he heard his opponent announced the winner, Mauricio Herrera didn’t blink. For even though he threw, and landed, more punches, and was consistently busier during the course of his 12-round bout with Jose Benavidez, Herrera had a sense of déjà vu as he waited for the decision. Last July, Herrera faced WBC, WBA, and The Ring junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia in the defending titleholders’ homeland of Puerto Rico. Herrera used movement, and his best weapon--his jab-- More heartbreak for warrior Herrera
