Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Garcia Makes Home (Away from Home) Debut

By Bill Tibbs (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): When Danny “Swift” Garcia makes the fourth defense of his World Boxing Association (WBA) “super” and World Boxing Council (WBC) world junior welterweight titles this weekend, it won’t be a home game for the unbeaten champion but it certainly will be a homecoming. Philadelphia-born and raised Garcia is proudly Puerto Rican as both parents were born on the island. Garcia has always thanked and praised his “P.R.” fan base and the champion... Ponce de Leon Looks to Even the Score

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): “I lost. That’s all,” is what Daniel Ponce de Leon says when you ask him about his initial match-up versus Juan Manuel Lopez in June of 2008 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. On that night, Ponce de Leon lost his WBO junior featherweight title as he was sent to the canvas twice and halted in the first round by the Puerto Rican. Perhaps he doesn’t want to recall too much of what happened that night or perhaps simply can’t. But as Ponce de Leon Looks to Even the Score

Danny Garcia: Puerto Rico's Lone Champion Goes Home

By Gabriel Montoya: Danny Garcia takes exception at the idea that Puerto Rico is - for the first time in a long time - without a boxing champion to call its own. “I don’t think it’s fair that you can say I’m not a Puerto Rican fighter because I wasn’t born in Puerto Rico, when my blood is Puerto Rican. So I had to let the fans know; hey, I’m a Puerto Rican fighter and that’s just the way it is and March 15, that’s why we got this fight in Puerto Rico, to solidify me as a Puerto Rican champion,” Danny Garcia: Puerto Rico's Lone Champion Goes Home

Weeks’ Stoppage Was the Right Call

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor / CANELO RED DEVIL by Chee, MaxBoxing): The boos cascaded from the rafters of the sold-out MGM Grand Garden Arena - as did the beer (or at least we all hope that was just Corona) - as referee Tony Weeks suddenly waved off the bout between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Alfredo Angulo after a uppercut sent Angulo’s head snapping back at the beginning of the 10th round. Mexican blood was boiling as the natives felt this fight was halted prematurely... Weeks’ Stoppage Was the Right Call

El Perro Finally Gets His Wish

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): At age 31 but with only 25 fights on his odometer, Mexicali-born junior middleweight contender Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo is both young and old in the sport of boxing. We last saw him in the ring last June against Erislandy Lara and by all accounts, he was winning, having dropped his opponent twice for the first knockdowns of the Cuban fighter’s career. Don’t Crown Him Just Yet…

By Steve Kim: What was supposed to be the coronation of Vasyl Lomachenko this past weekend at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas instead became a harsh lesson - both in and out of the ring - administered by Orlando Salido, who won by any means necessary. The crafty veteran from Cuidad Obregon has been described before as a hard man but it was more than just toughness that carried him through this night. He used all his veteran guile and savvy to... Salido, the Sacrificial Lamb?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): By virtue of having the WBO featherweight belt (which is supposedly a worthless strap to the particularly quixotic members of the boxing media), Orlando Salido with his 12 professional losses, was hand-selected by Vasyl Lomachenko and his team as their dance partner in just their second official pro fight as they attempt to win a world title in record setting fashion. ’Siri’ is by no means a great fighter, the only way he’ll get Salido, the Sacrificial Lamb?
