Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Vera Looks to Even the Score

By Bill Tibbs (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): When Julio Cesar Chavez, 47-1-1 (32) and Bryan Vera, 23-7 (14), meet up for the second time in six months at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas (HBO) tonight, they will be both look to answer some questions. They will also both look to use the bout as a springboard to bigger fights later in the year. Crawford Hits the Road

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): After having his last three bouts broadcast beneath the bright lights of HBO, lightweight contender Terence Crawford, sees himself in Glasgow, Scotland in his first attempt at a world title against WBO beltholder Ricky Burns at the Scottish Exhibition Centre. But this isn’t the first time Crawford has had to break out his passport to box. He recalls going to Venezuela as an amateur and according to Crawford, his trip overseas... Crawford Hits the Road

Vera Still Has Doubts

By Steve Kim ((Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): The last time Bryan Vera fought Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., it was originally designated a super middleweight contest. As we all know, a specially created weight was ultimately created at 173 pounds for the particularly enabled Chavez. As they head into their rematch at the Alamodome on Saturday night in San Antonio, once again, this fight’s contracted weight limit is 168 pounds. But Vera has his doubts that his opponent will tip... Vera Still Has Doubts

Do We Believe Chavez Now?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): This weekend, HBO gets back into the boxing business as it broadcasts the rematch between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Bryan Vera from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The last time they fought on September 28th, 2013, Vera seemed to outwork and outhustle the son of “J.C. Superstar” over 10 rounds. Yet as the scorecards were read, the trio of Gwen Adair, Marty Denkin and Carla Caiz, rendered a “business” decision in favor of Chavez... Do We Believe Chavez Now?

No Khan Do?

By Steve Kim (Image made by © Chee, MaxBoxing.com): Throughout the last few weeks and months, I’ve been asked when Floyd Mayweather (scheduled to go on May 3rd) will be making his official announcement regarding just exactly who he’d be facing in his next bout. Well, truth be told, Floyd and I really don’t talk all that much and he really doesn’t confide in such matters to me. So just like everybody else, I’ll find out when you do. For the past few months, it No Khan Do?

The Curious Case of Miguel Vazquez

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor, MaxBoxing): While the feature performer in Macao, China this weekend is two-time Chinese Olympic gold medalist Zou Shiming, the best fight from the Cotai Arena at the Venetian Resort today features IBF lightweight titlist Miguel Vazquez, who takes on the challenge of the hard-charging Russian, Denis Shafikov. Old Games, New Schemes, Same Difference

By Gabriel Montoya: Growing up, I didn’t care about the business of boxing. Fights got made or they didn’t. More often than not, they got made as far as I was concerned. I think I went from childhood to teenage fan, only upset that 1) Aaron Pryor and Sugar Ray Leonard didn’t fight each other; 2) Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield weren’t fully in their primes when they fought and 3a) Leonard and Marvelous Marvin Hagler fought too late and 3b) only once. Shiming on the Fast Track?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): While Zou Shiming - who is preparing for his fourth professional outing this weekend in Macao, China - is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, he isn’t exactly Vasyl Lomachenko or Guillermo Rigondeaux when it comes to natural talent (and yes, this is the early frontrunner for “Understatement of the Year” for 2014). Yes, he had a huge amateur pedigree but his skill set isn’t in the same stratosphere as those other two, who also captured Shiming on the Fast Track?

Where NSAC's “Enhanced Testing” May Take Us

By Gabriel Montoya (Image Art by © Chee, MaxBoxing): What’s up with the NSAC and its “enhanced testing” for Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley? It’s a solid question. According to Steve Carp of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, “included in the testing will be isotope-ratio mass spectrometry, which detects the use of exogenous testosterone. The IRMS test will be done in conjunction of testing for other performance-enhancing drugs such as anabolic steroids.”... Where NSAC's “Enhanced Testing” May Take Us

Requiem for a Repeat

By Steve Kim (Image by Chee, MaxBoxng): I have to be honest; I had no clue whatsoever that Vivian Harris was scheduled to fight this past weekend in the U.K. I was more than relieved to find that his scheduled bout versus Bradley Skeete was scrapped after he failed a pre-fight medical (http://boxingnewsonline.net/latest/news/vivian-harris-fails-medical-so-bradley-skeete-faces-christopher-sebire-instead) but the beat - or should we say, “beatings”... Magdaleno in Hawaiian Gardens

By Steve Kim (Photo © Al Applerose, Top Rank): At 17-0 (13), Jesse Magdaleno is one of the sport’s better young prospects. An exciting blend of speed and power, this southpaw gets back into action tonight at the C. Robert Lee Center in Hawaiian Gardens, California. 2014 could be the time in which he takes the next step in becoming a ranked contender in the junior featherweight division. “I think this year is my year and I gotta continue what I’m doing but other than that, I got a strong Magdaleno in Hawaiian Gardens
