Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Marcos Maidana Proves To Be A Big Problem For Broner

By Jason Pribila (Photo © Tom Casino/SHOWTIME): The last major fight card of 2013 took place on Saturday night in San Antonio, TX. In the main event Marcos “Chino” Maidana jumped on Adrien Broner early and punished him throughout their 12 round title bout en route to a unanimous decision victory. Despite fighting in a huge 24 foot ring, Maidana attacked from the opening bell and trapped Broner against the ropes. He dug body shots and chopping overhand rights and dominated the opening frame... Rios Tests Positive for DMAA, Suspended Five Months by CPBO

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): On Friday morning, respected veteran reporter Tim Smith broke the news that welterweight contender Brandon Rios had tested positive for DMAA (also known as Methylhexaneamine) per the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association, which had conducted strict, random, anti-doping tests for the weeks leading up to Rios’ fight with Manny Pacquiao on November 24 (November 23rd in the United States). Ann Wolfe: Boxing's Most Underrated Trainer

By Gabriel Montoya: Last Saturday night, former world champion-turned-trainer Ann Wolfe’s most renowned pupil, James Kirkland capped off his latest prodigal son act by stopping favorite Glen Tapia in six violent rounds. In the wake of that victory following a 20-month layoff, Kirkland has once again become a hot property. Broner Has no Problems

By Gabriel Montoya: WBC lightweight and WBA welterweight champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner seemingly has no problems these days. He’s signed with Al Haymon, promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, televised by Showtime and on his way to becoming a main event pay-per-view fighter whether boxing fans or the marketplace agree with it or not. Santa Cruz, Rested and Relaxed in 2013

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): As I walked through the beehive of activity that was the MGM Grand Hotel on the weekend of September 14th when Floyd Mayweather faced Saul Alvarez in the year’s biggest boxing event, I was struck by a particular scene near the Rouge (a favorite watering hole for us boxing scribes) and the adjacent slot machines. A huge throng of cameras emerged and fans who had come in for all the festivities swarmed around one Leo Santa Cruz. Yeah, he now draws a crowd in Santa Cruz, Rested and Relaxed in 2013

James Kirkland: About to Be a Legend

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): For the third time, James “Mandingo Warrior” Kirkland returned to the ring after an incarceration of sorts. The first time was at age 19 following his first round destruction of Russell Jordan as a 10-0 welterweight prospect. Kirkland’s trainer, Ann Wolfe, along with Donald “Pops” Billingsley, was still a professional fighter herself. Have We Learned Nothing?

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): After the fourth round of what was becoming more and more of a one-sided drubbing of Glen Tapia at the hands of the hard-charging James Kirkland, HBO’s Jim Lampley stated to the audience at home, “Glen Tapia is only 23 years old and may have a very bright future. You don’t want him to get ruined in one night.” In the wake of what has taken place recently with the likes of Franky Leal, Magomed Abdusalamov and Jose Carmona, surely discretion Have We Learned Nothing?

James Kirkland Returns (Again)

By Gabriel Montoya: The struggles and triumphs of James Kirkland have been many. Born in East Austin, Texas, he found his way to Donald “Pops” Billingsley’s gym somewhere around the age of eight. From there, a bond with boxing champion Ann Wolfe was first forged and continues to strengthen with each passing storm in a relationship as tumultuous as it is fruitful. Malignaggi vs. the Fanboys

By Steve Kim: At the opening press conference to formally announce this weekend’s bout at the Barclays Center (Showtime, 8 p.m., ET) in Brooklyn between Paulie Malignaggi and Zab Judah, the always talkative Malignaggi let loose a verbal barrage, not at his neighborhood rival but the media. And for a fighter with just seven knockouts to his credit in 37 professional outings (where he has notched a record of 32-5), it’s about as hard as he’s ever hit. Yeah, he’s not necessarily Malignaggi vs. the Fanboys

Judah vs. Malignaggi: A Lineage Begins in Brooklyn

By Gabriel Montoya: The hurt business is, at its core, the respect game. You demand it and then you try and take it. It’s what the hug at the end of a fight between warriors (who’d moments before had been trying to kill each other) is all about. Fighters fight for all manner of rewards but respect is the one gift they likely crave most and is certainly the one you can’t buy. In this world, there are likely few people more proud of where they come from than fighters from B Judah vs. Malignaggi: A Lineage Begins in Brooklyn

The Fight to Make at 175

By Steve Kim: In front of a lively and sizable throng at the Colisee de Quebec in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, the duo of Sergey Kovalev and Adonis Stevenson put on a display of power-punching that was both impressive and awe-inspiring this past Thanksgiving weekend. Kovalev, the co-headliner on this HBO broadcast, took care of Ismayl Sillakh - considered a “live” dog by some (OK; OK, admittedly that was me) - in two rounds and Stevenson dispatched the ballsy Tony Bellew in six heats.
