Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Barthelemy Stops Mendez After the Bell, Wins IBF Title

By Gabriel Montoya: At the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights” got off to a controversial start when newly-crowned IBF super featherweight titleholder Rances Barthelemy dropped two punches after the bell on Argenis Mendez, knocking him out. Barthelemy started fast, using his longer reach to whip shots at long range on the shorter Mendez. A series of left hooks in the first round hurt Mendez, putting him on the ropes early. 2014 Boxing Resolutions

By Steve Kim: It never fails; does it? The first month or so into the New Year, you see people you’ve never seen working out at the gym. They are the ones who make New Year’s resolutions to start working out and get back into shape and as soon as January 2nd rolls around, they become Jack Lalanne all of a sudden. You wouldn’t mind them so much but the problem is they cause overcrowding in the workout areas and you quickly lose patience with them as they take three minutes between preacher 2014 Boxing Resolutions

Looking ahead to boxing's needed changes in 2014

By Gabriel Montoya: The holidays are done. 2013 is in the books. And a fresh docket of fights is being put on the books. New Year’s is about starting over fresh. Personally, I’m not a New Year’s guy, measuring my yearly progress by my birthday. But everyone else on the planet takes this time to access the year that just was and make resolutions that will hopefully make for an even better year to come. 1. Let’s just admit we have a performance-enhancing drug problem... Looking ahead to boxing's needed changes in 2014

The 2013 “K9 Awards”: Part Two

By Steve Kim: OK, after a short intermission, we resume our highly unofficial - and quite frankly, not all that important – year-end awards and look back at 2013. For those who missed it (first of all, how could you?!), here’s Part One of the “K9 Awards” (*See article for Link). We now return to our regularly scheduled festivities… FIGHT OF THE YEAR / 5 - Carl Froch UD12 Mikkel Kessler: You get the sense that if these guys fought a hundred times, they’d produce a hundred good fights. The “Best of” Awards List: 2013

By Gabriel Montoya: Almost as a rule, I don’t read other people’s awards lists except to look for movies I missed during the year when I was busy covering fights. I just don’t care about lists. “Pound-for-Pound” lists or “Best Something” lists are pointless to me. They are subjective lists with conclusions reached arbitrarily. I attempted to write a “Best of” list over the weekend. Earlier in the week, I wrote a piece about who I think best exemplifies the qualities in a “F The “Best of” Awards List: 2013

The 2013 “K9 Awards”: Part 1

By Steve Kim: 2013 is now in the books and it was a banner year for the sport of boxing. While we had the lingering “Cold War” between Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank Promotions and the separating leagues of boxing fostered on Showtime and HBO, it was still a year filled with big events, great fights and memorable moments. So without any further ado, let’s get to the always anticipated “K9 Awards”... FIGHTER OF THE YEAR... The 2013 “K9 Awards”: Part 1

Something of the Year

By Gabriel Montoya: This is that list time of the year. What did I think was best out of all the things that happened in boxing? Which fighter’s journey affected me most? Life is comprised of moments. “Remember that time...?” Boxing is that to an extreme. Round one of Marvelous Marvin Hagler vs. Tommy Hearns. An entire series of battles in three minutes. OK, now that the niceties are out of the way, it’s time for another edition of “The Soapbox.” This submission comes in from a Mark Schoeman, who, while being a fan of one Paulie Malignaggi, took exception to a few things the “Magic Man” said in this recent article before his December 7th bout against Zab Judah. 14 for ‘14

By Steve Kim: A new year is upon us and as the calendar turns, we look forward to a fresh slate of fights on the horizon. Already the schedule is being set for the spring and winter months of 2014. But what are the best fights that can be made realistically? Let’s face it; with the current divide existing in the marketplace, who you are aligned with from either a promotional or network perspective bearing on your options. Well, here’s one scribe’s opinion of 14 fights he’d like to 14 for ‘14

Bradley and Provodnikov: Fighters of the Year

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © German Villasenor): In a decade thus far that seen a slow yet steadily rising tidal wave of popularity and quality for this most “dying” of sports, 2013 was an embarrassment of violent riches of varying heights and depths. We love this sport because the men and women who partake in it risk the lives and livelihoods in ways we never will. Those who give and receive the most push through the barriers most of us would crash and burn against. Just as well, those equally Bradley and Provodnikov: Fighters of the Year

Schaefer Sees no Thaw in the Cold War

By Steve Kim (K9’s ’Cold War’ Image by © Chee, MaxBoxing): Another year in boxing has come and gone and while it was very eventful, it saw the continued “Cold War” between its superpowers, Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank Promotions (who - once again - did not cross paths and co-promote any events in 2013) thrive. They have managed to coexist by existing in separate universes (Showtime and HBO, respectively). And guess what? Don’t expect to see any thaw in 2014... Schaefer Sees no Thaw in the Cold War

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): As the year winds down, there are still a few cards taking place during its final weekends. The Mismatch Report Vol. 4: Postmortem Edition

By Gabriel Montoya: The Mismatch Report is not intended to do anything but bring awareness to the general public about potentially dangerous matches that could result in serious injury or worse for one or both combatants. This is the hurt business. The promoters want to move their stable forward. The matchmakers want to keep their guys winning, developing and progressing. That’s the business. The Ratings Game

By Steve Kim (K9’s "Cold War" image by Chee, MaxBoxing): As boxing’s “Cold War” shows no signs of thawing, those who cover boxing are now subjected to various spin-doctoring from the two major networks (HBO and Showtime) facilitating this blood feud between Top Rank Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions as they each insist it is the dominant television entity in the sport.
