Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Leija Comes Full Circle

By Steve Kim: Back on September 10th, 1993, Jesse James Leija faced future Hall-of-Famer Azumah Nelson at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Leija would come up just a bit short in his bid for the WBC junior lightweight crown as he and “The Professor” fought to a draw in the first of four meetings over five years. But what Leija really remembers from that night is he fought in front of over 63,000 rabid fans, who had come to see this card and its main event, Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Pernell W Leija Comes Full Circle

Rigondeaux claims his place among the best

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): I once had the pleasure of witnessing unified super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux dance across the canvas to some of the most violent artists the world has ever known at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, CA. The southpaw Cuban legend known as “El Chacal” (The Jackal) was preparing for his fifth fight as a professional after an amateur career that boasted 2 gold medals among top honors at every world championship you... Austin Trout Hits the Road (Again)

By Steve Kim: On Saturday night from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, one of the year’s most anticipated events takes place between junior middleweight beltholders Austin Trout and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Between 35,000-to-40,000 fans are expected to be in the building but it wasn’t all that long ago when Trout was headlining on a much smaller stage. Back in November of 2011, Trout made his Showtime debut against the forgettable Frank LoPorto at Cohen Stadium in El Paso, Texas in front Austin Trout Hits the Road (Again)

Golovkin vs Macklin NYC Presser

Earlier this afternoon in front of a jam-packed room of media at NYC’s historic Gallagher’s Steak House in midtown Manhattan, K2 Promotions and DiBella Entertainment hosted the initial press conference to announce the highly-anticipated Middleweight Championship between defending champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (26-0, 23KO’s) and Ireland’s top-rated, former world title challenger Matthew "Mack The Knife" Macklin (29-4, 20KO’s). Azad Championship Report - Rigondeaux outboxes Donaire to win WBO title

By John J. Raspanti (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): 32-year-old WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux proved his amateur pedigree was no mirage by outpointing 2012 Fighter of the Year Nonito Donaire over 12 rounds at The Radio City Music Hall in New York City, NY. All three judges had Rigondeaux the winner by 114-113, 115-112 and 116-111. Rigondeaux is now the WBO and WBA champion. The fight was the headline bout on HBO’s World Championship Boxing... The Return of the Baby Bull

By Steve Kim: On the night of December 8th, near the entrance of the MGM Grand Garden Arena, this reporter was picking up his ringside credential for the fourth chapter of the rivalry between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. At the time, also at the will call area just happened to be one Juan Diaz, who I had not seen for quite awhile. Diaz, a former unified lightweight champion, was retired for a couple of years and was in town to enjoy the festivities. Coming off a round of golf with The Return of the Baby Bull

Rigondeaux gets his chance to enter the elite ranks

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): “A pound for pound showdown” or “important” are something fight fans who care about such things would call Saturday’s WBO/WBA super bantamweight (122 pound limit) battle between Nonito “Filipino Flash” Donaire, 31-1 (20) taking on undefeated WBA Super Bantamweight Champion and former two-time Cuban Olympic Gold Medalist Guillermo “El Chacal” Rigondeaux, 11-0, (8) at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, New York. Santana on ShoBox

By Steve Kim (Photo © Tom Casino / SHOWTIME): While Guillermo Rigondeaux faces Nonito Donaire this weekend in a high-profile junior featherweight showdown at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, another Cuban lefty continues his climb up the boxing ladder the night before. Lightweight Angelo Santana faces Bahodir Mamadjonov at the Treasure Island Casino in Las Vegas (Showtime, 10 p.m., ET/PT). Like many other Cubans defectors, he doesn’t speak much English (as of yet) and his story has Santana on ShoBox

Lee Pulls Goossen Back In

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): Joe Goossen knows exactly how Michael Corleone felt in “The Godfather Part III.” It wasn’t that long ago when the respected trainer - best known for working with the Ruelas brothers, Michael Nunn, Diego Corrales and Joel Casamayor - swore off working with novice boxers. Sick and tired of the grind (and really, the lack of loyalty in this business), he made a vow that while he was still a gun-for-hire or a troubleshooter for established prizefighters, his Lee Pulls Goossen Back In
