Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Valdez Begins Climbing the Ladder

By Steve Kim (Inside, new parody by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): There might come a time when Oscar Valdez will headline a major pay-per-view card but for the time being, this talented featherweight prospect is on the undercard this weekend at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas before Tim Bradley and Manny Pacquiao engage in their return bout. Jessie Vargas “I'm tired of hiding in the shadows”

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): At the moment, the U.S. boxing world is a dual universe commonly described as the “Cold War.” For the most part, this means Top Rank Promotions is on HBO and Golden Boy Promotions/Al Haymon’s stable of fighters is on Showtime. What this means for the boxing fan is there are only certain fights that will get made. When it comes to 140 and 147-pound divisions, what it currently means to Top Rank is that finding talent to be developed... Jessie Vargas “I'm tired of hiding in the shadows”

Make-up Call?

By Steve Kim: Despite Manny Pacquiao and Tim Bradley squaring off back in June of 2012, in the end, they weren’t the two most talked-about individuals involved. That distinction went to Duane Ford and CJ Ross. The two ringside judges were in the vast minority by scoring the fight for the “Desert Storm” in what was considered the 874th black eye for boxing and about the 43rd time the sport died. Alas... Something Wicked This Way Comes; Pacquiao, Bradley and the Endless Search for Respect

By Gabriel Montoya (Image created by Chee, MaxBoxing): “Too late, I found you can’t wait to become perfect, you got to go out and fall down and get up with everybody else.” - Ray Bradbury, Something Wicked This Way Comes. || Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, two champions will meet. Both battle-tested, one perhaps battle-weary - both with everything to prove. Each owns a different approach to the game called boxing, a game you can’t play. The elder... How Much Does Pacquiao Have Left?

By Steve Kim (Image by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): Manny Pacquiao is a fighter of many punches. However, most of the time, he’s a man of few words, which is a bit of a problem when you attempt to interview him. No, it’s not that he’s unpleasant or angry with the media - he’s just the opposite in fact - but by nature, he’s a soft-spoken individual (at least with the American press) and while much is on the line this upcoming Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena How Much Does Pacquiao Have Left?

U.S.S Cunningham Defeats Mansour & Showtime Stevens gets a late stoppage

By: Luis A. Cortes III (Photo © Rich Graessle/Main Events): The classic boxer versus power puncher match up did not fail to provide an all action affair as Steve "U.S.S" Cunningham (27-6)(12) took on Amir "Hardcore" Mansour (20-1)(15). By Luis A. Cortes III at ringside (Photo © Rich Graessle/Main Events): The opening bout of the evening featured Edner Cherry, 32-6-2 (17), who was coming off of a13-month layoff. Recently signed by Peltz Boxing, Cherry scored a unanimous decision win over the game Robert Osiobe, 14-9-4 (6) with scores of 77-75, 79-73 and 78-74. By Steve Kim: With much fanfare - and to the disappointment of many boxing fans - it was announced last week that the reigning light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson would be facing Andrzej Fonfara on May 24th in Montreal, Quebec, Canada as part of a deal struck with Showtime (which could eventually lead to a bout against Bernard Hopkins). Kathy Duva on the (Dying?) Art of Promoting

By Gabriel Montoya: “We need to sign all the talent and get all the TV dates.” - Oscar De la Hoya, September 2010 / Since Floyd Mayweather, Al Haymon and Golden Boy Promotions all walked from HBO to Showtime, Oscar De la Hoya’s then-controversial statement to broadcastingcable.com seems to be coming true more than ever. While how it is being done is an issue for De la Hoya, that it is being done at all is likely a problem for the sport as a whole. We’ve had the “Cold War” going for Kathy Duva on the (Dying?) Segura’s on the Cusp

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): By the end of 2011, Giovani Segura was considered one of the better fighters in the sport. No, he wasn’t one of the most technically sound or stylish performers in the game but it was hard to argue with the results of this two-handed slugger. Simply out, Segura cut a swath through the light flyweight division while riding the crest of two career-defining victories over the previously undefeated Ivan Calderon. But after getting stopped by Brian Viloria in Segura’s on the Cusp
