Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Fight Night at the Theater

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): It was a rough night at the office for Floyd Mayweather despite being a 12-to-1 favorite. It seems the rugged and hardnosed Argentine slugger, Marcos Maidana never got that memo. Using a smothering, two-fisted attack, Maidana never let Mayweather get completely comfortable throughout the proceedings. But Mayweather would get on track in the second half of the fight and eventually win a majority decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas... Fight Night at the Theater

Maidana had his Moments But Mayweather Seized "The Moment"

By Bill Tibbs (Photo © German Villasenor): A Floyd Mayweather (46-0, 26 KO’s) fight is an event. All the fanfare, fireworks and fun you could hope for. Oh, yeah, and a boxing match as well. The reigning king of the ring gets to inch towards his goal of 50-0 and his opponent (insert name here) gets to take a crack at being “the man who beat the man”. And, make no mistake, if you are getting a shot at Mayweather you better have something on that night or you are in trouble... Maidana had his Moments But Mayweather Seized "The Moment"

Molina Moves to San Diego

By Steve Kim (Photo © Esther Lin / SHOWTIME): In preparation for his bout tonight versus Adrien Broner at the MGM Grand, you didn’t see Carlos Molina working at his usual gyms in the Los Angeles area. Main Events Files Suit vs. Haymon and Co.

By Steve Kim: As you’ve probably heard by now, Main Events, led by Kathy Duva, has filed a lawsuit against light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson, his promoter Yvon Michel (the head of GYM), Al Haymon, Golden Boy Promotions and Showtime, which is largely centered on the match-up between Stevenson and Sergey Kovalev (who is promoted by Main Events) that imploded as Stevenson instead took a deal that sees him face Andrzej Fonfara on May 24th and then... The Best Laid Plans of Khan

By Gabriel Montoya: At age 27, life could not be more in transition for Amir “King” Khan, 28-3 (19). At the end of May, his new wife, Faryal will give birth to their first child, a daughter. Gone now are the days when he roamed around the world with his Khan-tourage through London, L.A. And Vegas and party like youth would last forever. No game reminds you that ever impending old age renders everyone’s game over at some point. Khan is in a delicate place, still feeling mere moments The Best Laid Plans of Khan

Against the Odds

By Steve Kim (Image by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): If you haven’t heard, Marcos Maidana, who faces Floyd Mayweather this Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, is a heavy underdog. Some books have “Money” as high as a 14-1 favorite. Is that reflective of Mayweather’s superlative skills of Mayweather or Maidana’s limitations? And is this number from the oddsmakers - who, again, are the real experts... Against the Odds

What Will Become The Moment?

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © German Villasenor): On Saturday, Floyd Mayweather Jr., the top star in boxing, will once again return to the ring and screens across the world. In movie theaters, bars and on closed-circuit televisions, “Floyd Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana: The Moment” is upon us. But what is it? What exactly is “The Moment?” Is it “The Moment” Mayweather, who doubles as the world’s best matchmaker, picks the wrong prepackaged foe? Marcos Maidana, 35-3 (31)... What Will Become The Moment?

Golden Civil War?

By Steve Kim (Image by icheehuahua, MaxBoxing): There really wasn’t much going on during the bout between WBC lightweight titlist Omar Figueroa and amateur nemesis Jerry Belmontes. Truth be told, there was much more attention paid to the lingering tension between Oscar De la Hoya and the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, Richard Schaefer, who once again acted like neither were in each other’s presence despite sitting just a few feet apart. The only thing chillier than the weather out in C Golden Civil War?

Matthysse Turns Back Molina in War

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): It hasn’t been a stellar year for boxing (at least in the States) but it had a gem on Saturday night at the StubHub Center as junior welterweights Lucas Matthysse and John Molina waged war over 11 memorable rounds. Finally, ’the Machine’ and his superior skills was able to subdue the hard-hitting banger from Covina, California. But he had to hit the deck twice in the process in the second and the fifth frames from... Matthysse Turns Back Molina in War

Puncher’s Chance

By Steve Kim (Image by Chee, MaxBoxing): Coming into March, John Molina believed he would be facing Adrien Broner on the Floyd Mayweather-Marcos Maidana undercard, May 3rd in Las Vegas. It turns out Broner’s team didn’t want to face such a heavy-handed banger and decided to take on the much lighter punching Carlos Molina. Instead, John Molina challenges Lucas Matthysse this weekend at the StubHub Center in Carson, California as part of Showtime’s tripleheader (9:30 pm, ET).... Puncher’s Chance

Improving The Fight Game

By Gabriel Montoya: The HBO series “The Fight Game with Jim Lampley” entered its third season this past Saturday night. The show is hosted by Jim Lampley and features segments by Max Kellerman, an blow-by-blow commentator who the network’s heir apparent to Lampley as well as a beat writer of some kind. Lopez Looks to Rebound from Listless Outing

By Steve Kim: Tonight from the Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, CA, Josesito Lopez headlines a special Thursday night edition of “Friday Night Fights” on ESPN2 (9 p.m., ET) against Aaron Martinez. The last time Lopez fought was on December 13th and frankly, he looked…well...not quite like a shot fighter - that would be too harsh of an assessment - but certainly a tad faded in struggling to an eight-round technical decision over the shopworn Mike Arnaoutis. It was a rather... Lopez Looks to Rebound from Listless Outing

Showtime Showcases

By Steve Kim: HBO hasn’t had a very good year when it comes to its boxing programming. This was highlighted on March 29th when the network broadcast a main event that featured Sergey Kovalev defending his WBO light heavyweight belt against the unknown Cedric Agnew, who was listed by bookmakers (who are the real experts most of the time) as high as a 38-1 underdog. To add insult to injury, it was announced earlier that week that Adonis Stevenson would be jumping ship to rival Showtime and Showtime Showcases

Capriciousness, Thy Name Is Malignaggi

By Gabriel Montoya: Over the weekend, I wrote a story in which I compared Paulie Malignaggi to Hamlet when it came to the subject of anti-doping testing beyond what commissions mandate in boxing. While I omitted the fact that Malignaggi underwent testing with USADA for for his June 22, 2013 fight with Adrien Broner, I stand by that comparison. By his own words, the... Professor Hopkins schools Shumenov

By John J. Raspanti: Continuing to defy Father Time, IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins (55-6-2, 32 KOs) captured the WBA lightheavyweight crown by outworking the much younger Beibut Shumenov (14-1, 9 KOs) over 12 rounds at the D.C. Porter, Malignaggi and the Trouble with Testing

By Gabriel Montoya: Early on, 2014 looked like it could be a banner year for the combat sports causes of anti-doping testing and fighters’ health and safety. It has certainly started off with great potential. In early January, Nevada’s athletic commission accepted the resignation of its now-former Executive Director Keith Kizer. Pacquiao Quietly Goes About Being a Real Fighter

By Bill Tibbs (Photo © German Villasenor): Boxing is a sport that can survive and thrive for a long time on the strength of a series of bouts - or even a single bout - if the recipe is right. The public interest can be electrified and galvanized to the point that the sport becomes “must see” sports viewing. Whether in series or one-offs, bouts like Joe Frazier-Muhammad Ali, Evander Holyfield-Mike Tyson, Marvelous Marvin Hagler-Sugar Ray Leonard and on a smaller scale... Mikey Garcia vs. Top Rank

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): It turns out that the big fight for WBO super featherweight titlist Mikey Garcia in 2014 will not be against Yuriorkis Gamboa but against his own promoter, Top Rank Promotions, who he recently filed suit against in a story broken by BadCulture.net. You could see this coming a mile (or least a month ago) away when Garcia accompanied his brother/trainer Robert Garcia to Las Vegas for the Saul Alvarez-Alfredo Angulo fight, which was promoted...
