Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

“Bradley and Provodnikov redefine ‘good, clean fight” and other stories

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © German Villasenor): Last Saturday night, I spent yet another memorable evening under the Southern California stars watching two men beat the hell out of each other in the pursuit of fortune and glory. It’s my job and my pleasure to be present for magic nights such as that one. In the champion’s corner was Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley, 30-0, 12 KOs, a hardworking two-division champion from Palm Springs, CA fresh off of a career-best win over Manny Pacquiao... “Bradley and Provodnikov redefine ‘good, clean fight” and other stories

Azad Championship Report - Provodnikov Feels like the Winner

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9): It was the usual busy scene this past Monday morning at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood. Even in the early hours, this gym was bustling with activity by professional prizefighters and white collar clients alike. But as Ruslan Provodnikov stepped through those doors, slowly, the cacophony inside this building died down, replaced by an ovation for the Russian, who seemed a bit overwhelmed by the reception given him. No, he didn’t get the decision... Azad Championship Report - Provodnikov Feels like the Winner

Azad Championship Report - Don King in the Twilight

By Thomas Hauser: Don King arrived at Barclays Center for the March 9th IBF 175-pound title fight between Bernard Hopkins and Tavoris Cloud shortly after 8:00 p.m. King will be 82 years old on August 20th, but he has the physical presence and vitality of a man half his age. His large bulky frame, Cheshire Cat grin, booming voice, and high-pitched laugh suggest a force of nature. Wherever King goes, he’s encapsulated in a bubble of public attention. Everyone, from high-ranking corporate... Azad Championship Report - Don King in the Twilight

Azad Championship Report - Rios Rematches Alvarado

By Steve Kim: When Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado first climbed into the ring together on the night of October 13th, 2012, they did something thought to be highly improbable. Over the course of seven heated rounds, the back-and-forth battle exceeded ridiculously high expectations. In an era when fans are conditioned to be guarded and prepared to be let down, this fight delivered - and then some. It’s one of those clashes that will be discussed for years to come. There were no titles... Azad Championship Report - Rios Rematches Alvarado

A Golden Divorce

A Golden Divorce

By Steve Kim (Pic © icheehuahua): For weeks, the question posed by those interested was: Given the changing landscape of the boxing business (in the form of Floyd Mayweather going across the street to Showtime), would HBO stay in the Adrien Broner business moving forward? Like Mayweather, Broner is under the Golden Boy Promotions banner and advised by the influential Al Haymon. Broner is scheduled to face WBA welterweight beltholder Paulie Malignaggi on June 22nd from the Barclays Center... A Golden Divorce

Azad Championship Report - Bradley Weathers the Storm

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): There was no official head count given this past Saturday night at the Home Depot Center in Carson. With one-third of the cozy tennis stadium closed off, most ringside media estimated there was about 2,000 or so fans who attended this weekend’s fight card. But after the donnybrook staged by Tim Bradley and Ruslan Provodnikov, there will probably be about 250,000 claiming they were there. In another classic at this small, intimate venue... Azad Championship Report - The table of success is set for Denis Shafikov

By Gabriel Montoya: At 27 years old, the time appears to be now for Miass, Russia’s own Denis Shafikov. This Saturday, fresh off his best win, Shafikov will look to make his presence known in the lightweight division by attempting to best Alisher Rahimov over twelve rounds for the WBC Baltic lightweight belt at Sports Palace "Znamya" in Noginsk, Russia. Before you get all crazy about the belt, understand that regional belts weed out local wheat from regional chafe. Azad Championship Report - Bradley Hopes to Earn Style Points

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): The perception regarding Timothy Bradley - who faces Ruslan Provodnikov this Saturday night at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California (HBO 10:15 pm, ET/PT) - is that while a talented and accomplished prizefighter, he is among the most unentertaining and boring boxers around. A guy whose fights are filled with more clashes of heads than actual clean punching. Bash Throws a Hollywood Fight Night

By Steve Kim: Promoter Steve Bash (the head of Bash Boxing) admits that promoting isn’t necessarily what pays his bills. Unlike, say, a Bob Arum, he’s not reliant on this to make ends meet. In fact, there’s a pretty good probability that Bash doesn’t make all that much money on this venture at all. So why does he do it? “It’s my sick, degenerative hobby and God bless the law practice,” he said with a laugh, adding, “I make some money as well but it’s also my Bash Throws a Hollywood Fight Night

Roach Looks to Rebound in 2013

By Steve Kim: As 2012 U.S. Olympian Jose Ramirez was working the mitts with one of Freddie Roach’s assistant trainers at the Wild Card Boxing Club, the question asked to the noted trainer last Saturday afternoon (while he was leaning on the top rope near his famous corner perch near the window overlooking Vine Street in Hollywood) was: Did he suddenly forget how to train fighters? “I must’ve,” he answered, laughing at the question... Azad Championship Report - Provodnikov Chases the Storm

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): Every fighter who steps into the ring deserves a shot at greatness. For most boxers, an entire life has been sacrificed for a taste of greatness. It doesn’t matter if it’s a long, slow, thirst-quenching drink from the river of fortune and glory or a fleeting sip on one special night against the right opponent at the right time. Not every fighter gets to exercise this right to pursue greatness nor is ready for it when it comes. Saturday... Azad Championship Report - Provodnikov Chases the Storm

Azad Championship Report - Satchel Paige Would Be Proud

By Steve Kim: Legendary hurler Satchel Paige, who Bernard Hopkins has referenced more than once as a role model, would be proud of “The Executioner.” Once again, Hopkins riddled a (much) younger foe in the prime of his athletic life on Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, taming Tavoris Cloud over 12 rounds to capture the IBF light heavyweight crown. Azad Championship Report - Hopkins makes history, captures light heavyweight title at age 48

By John J. Raspanti: Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins (53-6-2, 32 KO’s) became the oldest fighter to capture a title by dethroning defending champion Tavoris “Thunder” Cloud (24-1, 19 KOs) by unanimous decision at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. The bout was televised by HBO as part of their “Championship Boxing” series. The fight started slowly.
