Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Rigondeaux gets his chance to enter the elite ranks

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): “A pound for pound showdown” or “important” are something fight fans who care about such things would call Saturday’s WBO/WBA super bantamweight (122 pound limit) battle between Nonito “Filipino Flash” Donaire, 31-1 (20) taking on undefeated WBA Super Bantamweight Champion and former two-time Cuban Olympic Gold Medalist Guillermo “El Chacal” Rigondeaux, 11-0, (8) at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, New York. Santana on ShoBox

By Steve Kim (Photo © Tom Casino / SHOWTIME): While Guillermo Rigondeaux faces Nonito Donaire this weekend in a high-profile junior featherweight showdown at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, another Cuban lefty continues his climb up the boxing ladder the night before. Lightweight Angelo Santana faces Bahodir Mamadjonov at the Treasure Island Casino in Las Vegas (Showtime, 10 p.m., ET/PT). Like many other Cubans defectors, he doesn’t speak much English (as of yet) and his story has Santana on ShoBox

Lee Pulls Goossen Back In

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): Joe Goossen knows exactly how Michael Corleone felt in “The Godfather Part III.” It wasn’t that long ago when the respected trainer - best known for working with the Ruelas brothers, Michael Nunn, Diego Corrales and Joel Casamayor - swore off working with novice boxers. Sick and tired of the grind (and really, the lack of loyalty in this business), he made a vow that while he was still a gun-for-hire or a troubleshooter for established prizefighters, his Lee Pulls Goossen Back In

Donaire-Rigondeaux Start Game of Risk

By Steve Kim: This Saturday night at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, junior featherweight champion Nonito Donaire takes on talented Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux (HBO 11 p.m., ET). A few weeks later, in Las Vegas, in support of Floyd Mayweather’s return against Robert Guerrero, Abner Mares moves up to face WBC featherweight beltholder Daniel Ponce de Leon. By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Miguel Salazar): It’s been a hot minute since we’ve seen junior lightweight prospect Joel Diaz Jr., 11-0 (10), who takes on Victor Sanchez (who’s more dangerous than his record suggests) at the Bayou Event Center in Houston, Texas on April 4. Diaz kicked off 2012 with a “Fight of the Year” candidate against Guy Robb on “ShoBox.” Until he got off the canvas early to stop Robb in an instant classic, no one had ever heard of the 20-year-old Palmdale, CA badass when Joel Diaz Jr. Finally Descends the Mountain

Azad Championship Report - Viloria Becomes More than a Footnote

By Steve Kim (Photo © K9 Photos): On the night of January 23rd, 2010, Brian Viloria, then the IBF junior flyweight beltholder, was going through what was thought to be a rather routine defense versus Carlos Tamara. Back at that time, there was talk of Viloria unifying his title with Puerto Rican stylist Ivan Calderon (who held the WBO strap). It’s the type of fight a solid champion is supposed to get past. Azad Championship Report - Alvarado vs. Rios II: Alvarado Gets Redemption; Everybody Wins

Gabriel Montoya (Photo © German Villasenor): There is nothing more humbling than watching two prizefighters, each with iron will and fists of steel, hammer away round after spectacular round. Each bends the other while buckling under the pressure and pounding in turn. Great chemistry leads to terrific ebb-and-flow and this past Saturday night, “Mile High” Mike Alvarado, 34-1 (23), and Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios, 31-1-1, (23), displayed exactly that for the second time in a row at the Mandalay Bay Azad Championship Report - Alvarado vs. Rios II: Alvarado Gets Redemption; Everybody Wins

Azad Championship Report - Game of Thrones at the Mandalay Bay

By Steve Kim (Photo © German Villasenor): In the aftermath of Mike Alvarado’s close, hard-fought victory over Brandon Rios at the Mandalay Bay on Saturday night, neither combatant would be able to make it to the post-fight press conference. Both were sent to the hospital to undergo observation and tests. Yeah, it was that kind of night.
