Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Combat Sports Health and Safety in 2014: Job ONE

By Gabriel Montoya (Image created by © Chee, MaxBoxing): The sport of boxing over the last four years has changed greatly. On one hand, it has entered a period of education and enlightenment in regard to health and safety. When Floyd Mayweather Jr. brought the advanced anti-doping testing issue to light four years ago, he showed the sport a path toward change. Left to the boxing media in general, the issue wouldn’t be raised except for the odd tragedy or positive drug test. Left to the 50 Combat Sports Health and Safety in 2014: Job ONE

Business Before Pugilism

By Steve Kim: 2014 is off to a rather slow start in boxing (basically taking the next month off as HBO and Showtime go dark in February for whatever reason) but starting in early March, it does pick up steam and builds great momentum toward the summer months. The schedule actually looks pretty enticing should it come to fruition. But first and foremost, boxing is a business (news flash, right?) and before any fights happen, deals have to be struck. Oftentimes, these negotiations are more Business Before Pugilism

Freddie Roach: “Testing should be mandatory”

By Gabriel Montoya (Gabriel’s NO PED Logo - By Chee, MaxBoxing): It’s been four years since Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s initial negotiations started the current anti-doping debate/firestorm in boxing. That fight fell apart when Mayweather demanded Pacquiao join him in what was then called “Olympic-style testing” to be conducted by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). Pacquiao balked at the demand; the two sides fought over a cutoff date for testing and Freddie Roach: “Testing should be mandatory”

A Complicated Legacy

By Steve Kim: News spread on Thursday evening that after a long illness, longtime World Boxing Council President Jose Sulaiman passed away at the age of 82. His death left a myriad of responses ranging from sadness to jubilation, depending on the point of view you had on the man. Is the Bute Bubble About to Burst?

By Steve Kim: Tonight at the Bell Centre, a Montreal showdown takes place between Jean Pascal and Lucian Bute. And for Bute, much more than the NABF light heavyweight title or city bragging rights are on the line. Simply put, for the 33-year-old native of Romania, this is a referendum on his whole career.
