Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Requiem for a Repeat

By Steve Kim (Image by Chee, MaxBoxng): I have to be honest; I had no clue whatsoever that Vivian Harris was scheduled to fight this past weekend in the U.K. I was more than relieved to find that his scheduled bout versus Bradley Skeete was scrapped after he failed a pre-fight medical (http://boxingnewsonline.net/latest/news/vivian-harris-fails-medical-so-bradley-skeete-faces-christopher-sebire-instead) but the beat - or should we say, “beatings”... Fury Defeats Abell In Four - Chisora Decisions Johnson

Heavyweight rivals Dereck Chisora and Tyson Fury came through their respective bouts at the Copperbox Arena in London on Saturday night to set up a summer showdown WBO title eliminator. In a clash between former world title challengers Chisora floored Johnson in round five with a big right hand and looked as though he was going to score a stoppage win but Johnson somehow survived the battering against the determined Chisora, who was looking to impress... Magdaleno in Hawaiian Gardens

By Steve Kim (Photo © Al Applerose, Top Rank): At 17-0 (13), Jesse Magdaleno is one of the sport’s better young prospects. An exciting blend of speed and power, this southpaw gets back into action tonight at the C. Robert Lee Center in Hawaiian Gardens, California. 2014 could be the time in which he takes the next step in becoming a ranked contender in the junior featherweight division. “I think this year is my year and I gotta continue what I’m doing but other than that, I got a strong Magdaleno in Hawaiian Gardens

The Soapbox: Thawing the Cold War

By Steve Kim: A few days ago I was tweeting (which I do quite a bit) on the recent situation regarding Erislandy Lara’s calling out of Gennady Golovkin. It’s certainly a solid match-up. Lara is one of the sports premiere 154-pounders and Golovkin has developed a reputation as one of the most feared fighters in the game as the WBA middleweight titlist. In a perfect world, this fight would occur but we all know we currently live in the “Cold War” era of boxing. Because of Lara’s The Soapbox: Thawing the Cold War

Magdaleno Makes Changes

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): This Saturday night from the C. Robert Lee Center in Hawaiian Gardens, California, Diego Magdaleno faces Jorge Pazos to kick off his 2014 campaign. Last year at this time, Magdaleno was preparing for his first world title opportunity against WBO junior lightweight beltholder Rocky Martinez, whom he faced on April 6th in Macao, China. Robert Garcia, Part Two: The Blame Game

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © Chris Robinson/ HustleBoss.com): The subject turned to trainer Robert Garcia’s fighter, Brandon Rios’ positive test result for the banned stimulant DMAA. “I was at some other fights. [Rios’s manager] Cameron Dunkin called me. It was like December 3rd when Cameron Dunkin called me and told me. I don’t know when he called Brandon after that but Cameron is the one who called me and told me,” Robert Garcia said to me and my co-host David Duenez on Robert Garcia, Part Two: The Blame Game

Right Now, It’s No-Time

By Steve Kim (Pic created by © Chee, MaxBoxing): This upcoming weekend was supposed to be the date for the rematch between WBC featherweight titlist Jhonny Gonzalez and Abner Mares from the Staples Center. But when Mares pulled out of the fight citing a rib injury (an alibi Gonzalez and his camp still aren’t buying), it meant - other than a couple of “ShoBox” telecasts - Showtime would not be televising any major boxing cards this month. In fact, the network that had a banner 2013 doesn& Right Now, It’s No-Time

Hard-Earned Respect for Bradley

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): At this time last year, Tim Bradley was in a rather dark mood. Coming off what should’ve been a career-changing victory over Manny Pacquiao in June of 2012, he became a boxing pariah, resolute and unapologetic in accepting the controversial split decision over the Filipino icon. And soon, Bradley found out that fan is short for “fanatic.” “I got mail, death threats, y’ know, phone calls, letters, ‘You didn’t win this fight; give the Hard-Earned Respect for Bradley

By Gabriel Montoya: There are few fighters in boxing more candid than former lightweight champion Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios, 31-2-1 (23). A few months removed from his 12-round unanimous decision loss to Manny Pacquiao, 55-5-2 (38), in November, Rios joined www.leaveitintheringradio.com last Thursday for a candid discussion about the loss, his positive post-fight drug test through the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) and his relationship with strength-and-conditioning coaches Angel “Memo” H Rios on Pacquiao, DMAA, Ariza, Heredia and More: Part One

The American Stream

By Steve Kim (Photo © Sumio Yamada): As a law-abiding citizen and someone who certainly doesn’t want to catch the ire of my good friend and press row colleague, Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Ramirez Hits the Road to Laredo

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): This winter chill has affected many people in a multitude of ways this past week.
