Boxing and poker – maybe a start on something new?

Even though both sports are known for intense action and rough characters, boxing and poker aren’t usually combined. This didn’t stop Gus Hansen (known as one of the biggest full tilt poker names)and Danish poker pro Theo Jorgensen from duking it out. Both know as skilled poker players in both the online poker and live tournament circuit, did quite well as shown in the video.

Rios on DMAA, Heredia, Ariza and More: Part Two

By Gabriel Montoya (Photo © CHris Farina / Top Rank): When we left off, former lightweight titleholder Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios, a few months removed from his lopsided loss to Manny Pacquiao, was telling one version of why he thinks he tested positive for DMAA following a post-fight drug test administered by drug-testing agency, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA). Rios admitted to taking the energy drink Jack3d, which used to contain the banned substance and was outlawed by the Food and Rios on DMAA, Heredia, Ariza and More: Part Two

Hard-Earned Respect for Bradley

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): At this time last year, Tim Bradley was in a rather dark mood. Coming off what should’ve been a career-changing victory over Manny Pacquiao in June of 2012, he became a boxing pariah, resolute and unapologetic in accepting the controversial split decision over the Filipino icon. And soon, Bradley found out that fan is short for “fanatic.” “I got mail, death threats, y’ know, phone calls, letters, ‘You didn’t win this fight; give the Hard-Earned Respect for Bradley

Rios on Pacquiao, DMAA, Ariza, Heredia and More: Part One

By Gabriel Montoya: There are few fighters in boxing more candid than former lightweight champion Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios, 31-2-1 (23). A few months removed from his 12-round unanimous decision loss to Manny Pacquiao, 55-5-2 (38), in November, Rios joined www.leaveitintheringradio.com last Thursday for a candid discussion about the loss, his positive post-fight drug test through the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) and his relationship with strength-and-conditioning coaches Angel “Memo” H Rios on Pacquiao, DMAA, Ariza, Heredia and More: Part One

The American Stream

By Steve Kim (Photo © Sumio Yamada): As a law-abiding citizen and someone who certainly doesn’t want to catch the ire of my good friend and press row colleague, Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports, I was in a bit of a bind on Saturday afternoon. Like the rest of America - which was not one of 100 countries able to view Gennady Golovkin’s contest versus Osumanu Adama from Monte Carlo, Monaco, much to the disdain of HBO subscribers - I was relegated to…um…a “radio broadcast.” (And I have to The American Stream

Ramirez Hits the Road to Laredo

By Steve Kim (Photo © Chris Farina / Top Rank): This winter chill has affected many people in a multitude of ways this past week. Whether stranded on frozen highways or staying overnight in high school gyms or the nearest convenience store, the lives of millions in one way or the other have been disrupted by Mother Nature. Jose Ramirez, who fights tonight in Laredo, Texas, should count his blessings that he wasn’t in Atlanta over the past few days. Can Victor Find the “Vicious”?

By Bill Tibbs: “Vicious” Victor Ortiz will return to his day job on January 30th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York after a long break - no pun intended. Ortiz is returning after a broken jaw that saw him leave the ring for what is now nearly two years. Is It 2013 All over Again for GGG?

By Steve Kim (Image created by © Chee, MaxBoxing): All across the globe, boxing fans will be able to see Gennady Golovkin’s latest defense of his WBA middleweight title versus Osumanu Adama. Well, that is except in the good ol’ U.S. of A. Combat Sports Health and Safety in 2014: Job ONE

By Gabriel Montoya (Image created by © Chee, MaxBoxing): The sport of boxing over the last four years has changed greatly. On one hand, it has entered a period of education and enlightenment in regard to health and safety. When Floyd Mayweather Jr. brought the advanced anti-doping testing issue to light four years ago, he showed the sport a path toward change. Left to the boxing media in general, the issue wouldn’t be raised except for the odd tragedy or positive drug test. Left to the 50 Combat Sports Health and Safety in 2014: Job ONE

Business Before Pugilism

By Steve Kim: 2014 is off to a rather slow start in boxing (basically taking the next month off as HBO and Showtime go dark in February for whatever reason) but starting in early March, it does pick up steam and builds great momentum toward the summer months. The schedule actually looks pretty enticing should it come to fruition. But first and foremost, boxing is a business (news flash, right?) and before any fights happen, deals have to be struck. Oftentimes, these negotiations are more Business Before Pugilism
